Author Interview: Trish Mauldin

A little about Trish....

Well, I was always good in English, so I guess that's where the interest in reading and writing comes from.  That, and I had an awesome high school English teacher.  She was my inspiration.  It just took me a while to actually sit down and write the thing.  I became a volunteer firefighter and then left the country.  When I came back, I went back to firefighting.  So needless to say, I had no free time.  It wasn't until about 2 years ago that I actually started writing though.  I swelled up like an Oompaloomapa and couldn't move or bend my joints.  I was diagnosed with arthritis, and while waiting for the inflammation to go down, I was stuck on the couch. So I wrote.

Can you tell us a little about your novel Becoming the Sheriff's Wife?

Becoming the Sheriff's Wife is a romantic drama/comedy about a woman, Blakeley, who decides she's had enough of her abusive boyfriend and runs to the hometown of her best friend, Robert, who is also the sheriff.  Ashamed of her past, she lies about it.  When Robert introduces her to his chief deputy, it's hate at first sight.  He knows she's lying about something, and she knows she needs to keep her secret hidden.  After the truth finally comes out, Blakeley is not only surprised by the deputy's reaction, but is forced to make a decision.  Does she let him into her life, does she run again?

Where did you get the idea for Becoming the Sheriff's Wife?

Okay, I hate to admit it...but I got the idea for Becoming the Sheriff's Wife from eating fried chicken and watching Red Dwarf right before bed.  How those two things gave me the dream I had, I haven't the foggiest.  I nearly had the entire book done by the time I woke up though.

Why is Becoming the Sheriff's Wife a good read?

I think Becoming the Sheriff's Wife is a good read because it's something you can enjoy down by the pool.  That, and, who doesn't like love?

Are you currently working on any projects at the moment?

Right now, I'm working on a book about a woman who is telepathic.  She's struggled nearly her whole life to keep everyones thoughts out of her head and to just be normal.  I'm only at 853 words, so I'm afraid that's really all the information I can give about it.

Trish's Book History:

My favorite book as a child was 'Cat in the Hat' by Doctor Suess.  I loved (still love) cats.

When I became a teen, it was 'War and Peace' by Leo Tolstoy.  I REALLY did love to read.

Of all the books I read this year, 'The Time Traveler's Wife' by Audrey Niffenegger was my favourite!

A book that taught me a valuable lesson was 'Pride and Prejudice' by Jane Austen.  Before I can have an opinion about someone, I need to get to know them first.

A recommendation for your followers would be 'Generation Dead' by Daniel Waters.  It's about this phenomenon that starts sweeping the nation.  People are coming back to life a few minutes after they die, but it's only teenagers that it affects.  The author does a good job with the character's backgrounds, and you can't help but become attached.  It also evokes some emotions, especially at the end.  I personally can't wait to read the rest of the sequel.
