Author Interview: Elizabeth Issacs

A little about Elizabeth and her writing career so far:

I'm a mother of two teens, and I also teach elementary music to over 500 children. I've always loved to write, but never shared my work with anyone. When I started teaching, I put creating stories on hold. It wasn't until a few years ago when I volunteered to help underprivileged children with their writing portfolios that my passion for the written word was rekindled.  As for influences, I love JK Rowling, Maya Angelou, Tolkien, and Ray Bradbury just to name a few.

You are the author of The Light of Asteria the first book in the Kailmeyra Series. Can you tell me a little about it?

The Light of Asteria: Kailmeyra's Last Hope (Kailmeyra, #1)

If Nora Johnson hadn't been on campus that day she would have never known her true destiny. Helping her friends move into the dorm that she wanted to call home, Nora accidentally collides with mysterious stranger, Gavin Frey. His very first touch sends flames through her heart. The world seems different-something within her has changed. She tries to resume her mundane life, but she is now consumed with the one whose very presence ignited her soul, the one with eyes of emerald. Nora soon learns that an energy buried deep within has been unleashed. She now wields unimaginable power and has become Gavin's source, his strength. Her newfound joy is shaken when she discovers that Gavin is not who he appears to be and she has been thrust in the middle of a war of mythical proportions. Negativity allows all things evil to flourish, the earth is under siege. The fate of creation hinges on the power within her heart. Will she be strong enough to survive? A gripping tale of unbounded love and ancient power, The Light of Asteria will take you on an epic adventure filled with war, treachery, and demons, as well as unimaginable delights.

Where did you get the idea for The Kailmeyra Series?

The Light of Asteria started as a freewrite of a vast woodlands; earth as it was originally created. And then appeared a man with broad shoulders and eyes as green as hawthorne leaves. And I knew I was given a story to write. The question then became did I have enough guts to actually put it on paper.

The Kailmeyra series is science fiction/fantasy mixed with romance is this the genres your prefer to write in or would you like to explore new genres such as dystopian, horror, etc?

I love creating new worlds, and so fantasy fits my personality nicely. But I'd also like to try a contemporary piece one day. I've tried to like dystopian, but it drains me to read it. And horror just gives me nightmares. I think years of teaching children has made me a sensitive soul because it seems to get worse with time. As for other genres, I'd love to write a children's book, and a historical piece. Several of my writer friends have dared me to write a really steamy romance, but I'm not sure I'm that adventuresome! :-)

The Light of Asteria is the first in a trilogy. Is there a release date for The Secret of the Keepers, Kailmeyra's Strength the second book in the trilogy?

The Secret of the Keepers is going through the final stages of editing at the moment and is slated to be released on October 31st. The month leading up to a release is one of the most exciting and terrifying experiences I've ever known. I plan to sleep sometime mid November. :-)

Are you currently working on any new projects?

There is one more in the Kailmeyra series that has yet to be written, and I'm working on the YA steampunk as well. This summer I hope to have the first drafts done on both.

Why should we read The Light of Asteria?

The Light of Asteria was originally written as a gift for my daughter. It was meant to teach what true love is supposed to be and the power of forgiveness. It's not your typical YA story in that the love interest, Gavin, isn't a "bad boy". If you like YA fantasy/romance with a new twist, I think you'll like Nora's story.

Thanks to Elizabeth for the awesome interview!
