When Mikey's dad died, something in Mikey died too. He loved his old man and he never stopped dreaming that one day his dad would land the role of a lifetime, prove them all wrong, and rock back up to the estate in the flashiest car anyone had ever seen. Now there's just numbness, and not caring, and really, really stupid decisions. He says the worst of it is that he can't even remember his dad's voice any more. Eventually Mikey's best mate can't bear it any more, and so he sets out to give Mikey the memories - and his dad's voice - back

Mind the gap is a quick read but one of importance. It is a story of grief, friendships and the length you would go for friends in their time of need.

The story revolves around 15 year old Mikey who has just lost his father and in his grief is slowly losing himself. His best friend can see this and wants to help Mikey and sets out to try and find something to help Mikey though his grief.

For such a short story (a little under a 100 pages) it packs a punch. It showed the emotions of too young boys perfectly and I loved seeing a book exploring the emotions of boys rather than girls , it was refreshing. It depicted life on an estate perfectly and it demonstrated that a person doesn't have to be defined by their means and circumstance. My favourite thing was the show and strength of friendship in this book and it was great to see two boys emotionally connected.

Overall this was such an enjoyable read that made me have a tear in my eye at the end and a smile on my face.

*Note: I loved the inspiration for this story*
