Interview & Giveaway: Laura A.H. Elliott

A little about Laura and her writing career so far:

I was working at E! Entertainment Television in Los Angeles when the writing bug first bit. It was fed and nourished there and while I worked at The Los Angeles Times, where I was constantly reminded that truth really is stranger than fiction. In Los Angeles, I had lots of mentors and people who encouraged me. [I list most of them in the Acknowledgements of both Winnemucca, a small-town fairy tale and 13 on Halloween.] But it was only when I thought my husband had died in a bicycling accident that I put pen to paper. He didn’t die, thank God, but I ran so fast to see if it was my husband at the accident scene, sadly a man did die there that day, that I ended up in three non-walking casts and, along with painting my laundry room, I started writing short stories. This was about ten years ago. One thing led to another. I joined The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators where I found life-long friends and also attended lots of conferences and workshops. I worked with a few professional editors as well.

Writing isn’t something that comes easy. It takes a great deal of work. I am constantly inspired by my mom and dad and also my husband. They are the hardest workers I know and they are always there to give me encouragement. I also take great inspiration from the writers I admire. There are so many, but I would have to say Gabriel García Márquez is a touchstone for me because of his lyrical writing and ability to put words to matters of the heart. I also enjoy Fannie Flagg for her passion and elegant truths.

Can you tell me a little about your novel, 13 on Halloween?

13 on Halloween (Volume 1)
13 on Halloween is a snarky romp about a girl’s birthday wish going horribly wrong.
Twelve-year-old Roxie wants to be like Adrianne, the peacock who gets everything she wants––a trampoline, a flock to prowl around the mall with, and most especially invitations to parties. But everything changes when Roxie invites all the peacocks in the eighth grade to her thirteenth birthday party on Halloween and they all come. And a boy, the boy, actually talks to Roxie. Roxie has the best night of her life until the peacocks decide they want to celebrate her birthday in a way Roxie never expects––in her attic, with a pact to never tell a living soul what happens there.

Where did you get the idea for 13 on Halloween?

I got the idea from lots of places. I’ve always wanted to write a story about Halloween. One of my favorite books my girls and I read aloud together when they were little was The Witch’s Hat by Tony Johnston, and illustrated by Margot Tomes. In legend, Halloween is the time that the veil is thinnest between the spiritual world and the mortal world and that idea is fascinating to me. Plus, where I grew up there was a local ghost story that made the idea of ghosts and spirits likely. My mother is half Irish and she told some amazing tales about “The Great Beyond.” It’s fun to make-believe. I guess I just never grew out of it.

I actually started to write a trilogy a while back when I first started writing. The first book in the trilogy was called Wanda and The Witch Kingdom. Wanda is Roxie’s same age and Wanda’s family has lots and lots of secrets. WWK takes place in a Chicago suburb like 13 on Halloween. The story of WWK never left me. I believe that Wanda will meet Roxie in book 2 of the Teen Halloween Series, 14 on Halloween. Wanda will be the new girl at school.

Also, last school year I volunteered at an elementary and middle school, while working for Monterey Reads, a literacy program. It had been a long time since I’d been around kids so young, since mine are now raised. They inspired me to write this story. I was also inspired by an incident that occurred to me in middle school.

Are you working on any other books at the moment?

I am and I’ve included a sneak peek of my work-in-progress, Transfer Student, in both the released  and kindle copies of 13 on Halloween. Transfer Student is a YA freaky-Friday story about how a geek, alien boy and a Beverly Hills surfer, fashionista survive each others' lives only to fall for each other, a galaxy apart.

Why should we read your book, 13 on Halloween?

I think 13 on Halloween gives an interesting, humorous insight into popularity and what it means to have it all. It’s a snarky romp that examines the green monster and ways teens can take control of their lives. It also plays with language in fun ways. Roxie likes to use animals as verbs and has her own unique way of seeing the world.

Check out Laura's other book Winnemucca, a small-town fairy tale!

"When fear’s as blind as love, how far would you go to find your own happily ever after? One mistake will change Ginny’s life forever. One answer will set her free. Once upon a time Ginny’s road blood ripened, the day she got wise to love. Engaged to the high school quarterback, his quarter-carat ring and enchanting smile should have been enough for her. But, she stands him up and takes a walk where every step questions her happily ever after gone-bad and the fate of the mother she never knew. The mother her father refuses to talk about. Ginny fights to untangle her big, fat, lie-of-a-life on an enchanted road trip to Winnemucca, where she believes all her answers lie. To solve the riddle of her past, she must outrun everyone who wants a piece of her future–including a man determined to see she never has one."

Laura's Book History!

What was your fave book as a child and why?

The Night Before Christmas. It’s the only book that I remember my mom reading to me and after we read the story, Santa had arrived with our presents.

What was your fave book as a teenager and why?

The Martian Chronicles. It was the first book that I could really see in my mind and was unlike anything I’d ever read before.

What is your fave book you have read this year and why?

Right now, I’m reading The Lost City of Z. It’s non-fiction. I usually don’t read non-fiction. But I love this book and have written a story set in the Amazon and my father worked there as well, I traveled there. So it’s endlessly fascinating to me.

Which book would you recommend to my readers to read and why?

One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez. Because you take an amazing journey and feel like the author is a friend afterwards.

A book that has taught you a lesson and why?

OOO. Great question. This is a tough one. I learn something with every book. I guess I’ll have to say, that On Writing by Stephen King has been the book that has taught me the most about writing.

Review: Dark Inside by Jeyn Roberts

Dark Inside is an apocalyptic novel from debut author Jeyn Roberts. In Dark Inside a earth shattering earthquake causes death and devastation across the world. Something is released when the earthquake happens. Something murderous. People start to savagely turn on each other, murdering each other for the fun of it. "No one can be trusted, not even yourself."

Dark Inside

The story is told from four teenagers perspectives. Michael, Aries, Mason and Clementine must fight for survival and discover how they strong they each can be.

Each person's story starts with tragic loses due to the effect the earthquake has on humanity. Mason's mum is killed in a road rage accident. His friends are killed when people blow up his high school, while he is rushing to be by his mum's side. After the tragic events and with the world going crazy, Mason decides to travel to the one place he felt happy and safe, Second Beach in Vancouver, where he had visited with his mum. Along the way Mason must try and fight the "rage" from taking over him.

Clementine is at a town meeting with her parents when the other town residents go crazy and start murdering everyone at the meeting. Clementine's parents tell her to run and she does even though she doesn't want to leave her parents. Her parents are killed in the massacre and so Clementine decides to travel to Seattle to see if her brother, who is there for college, is still alive. She knows it would be what her mum would want her to do.

Micheal sees at first hand the violence and rage that has gripped humanity. Micheal and his friend are driving home when they see a man driving his car erratically, trying to knock another man of his motorbike. The man succeeds and even when the man is lying in the road died, the car driver, stops, gets out and violently continues to punch and kick the died man. The police arrive and intervene, however they then turn on the man and shot him in the head. This leads Micheal to join a group of survivors and try to survive by leaving the city.

Aries is on a bus journey with her best friend on the way to rehearsals for her school play when the earthquake occurs and the bus crashes. Her best friend is killed instantly and with the help of another survivor she manages to get to her school safely where she meets some of her fellow classmates and they start the journey to fight for survival.

Each character encounters bumps on the way to their ultimate destination that knocks their strength and confidence at surviving but though strength and willpower, they decide that they will fight and survive and ultimately fight the rage.

Overall I loved Dark Inside it was an intense, gripping and powerful story that shows the best and worst of humanity. I can't wait for the next book in the series!

Author Interview: Elizabeth Issacs

A little about Elizabeth and her writing career so far:

I'm a mother of two teens, and I also teach elementary music to over 500 children. I've always loved to write, but never shared my work with anyone. When I started teaching, I put creating stories on hold. It wasn't until a few years ago when I volunteered to help underprivileged children with their writing portfolios that my passion for the written word was rekindled.  As for influences, I love JK Rowling, Maya Angelou, Tolkien, and Ray Bradbury just to name a few.

You are the author of The Light of Asteria the first book in the Kailmeyra Series. Can you tell me a little about it?

The Light of Asteria: Kailmeyra's Last Hope (Kailmeyra, #1)

If Nora Johnson hadn't been on campus that day she would have never known her true destiny. Helping her friends move into the dorm that she wanted to call home, Nora accidentally collides with mysterious stranger, Gavin Frey. His very first touch sends flames through her heart. The world seems different-something within her has changed. She tries to resume her mundane life, but she is now consumed with the one whose very presence ignited her soul, the one with eyes of emerald. Nora soon learns that an energy buried deep within has been unleashed. She now wields unimaginable power and has become Gavin's source, his strength. Her newfound joy is shaken when she discovers that Gavin is not who he appears to be and she has been thrust in the middle of a war of mythical proportions. Negativity allows all things evil to flourish, the earth is under siege. The fate of creation hinges on the power within her heart. Will she be strong enough to survive? A gripping tale of unbounded love and ancient power, The Light of Asteria will take you on an epic adventure filled with war, treachery, and demons, as well as unimaginable delights.

Where did you get the idea for The Kailmeyra Series?

The Light of Asteria started as a freewrite of a vast woodlands; earth as it was originally created. And then appeared a man with broad shoulders and eyes as green as hawthorne leaves. And I knew I was given a story to write. The question then became did I have enough guts to actually put it on paper.

The Kailmeyra series is science fiction/fantasy mixed with romance is this the genres your prefer to write in or would you like to explore new genres such as dystopian, horror, etc?

I love creating new worlds, and so fantasy fits my personality nicely. But I'd also like to try a contemporary piece one day. I've tried to like dystopian, but it drains me to read it. And horror just gives me nightmares. I think years of teaching children has made me a sensitive soul because it seems to get worse with time. As for other genres, I'd love to write a children's book, and a historical piece. Several of my writer friends have dared me to write a really steamy romance, but I'm not sure I'm that adventuresome! :-)

The Light of Asteria is the first in a trilogy. Is there a release date for The Secret of the Keepers, Kailmeyra's Strength the second book in the trilogy?

The Secret of the Keepers is going through the final stages of editing at the moment and is slated to be released on October 31st. The month leading up to a release is one of the most exciting and terrifying experiences I've ever known. I plan to sleep sometime mid November. :-)

Are you currently working on any new projects?

There is one more in the Kailmeyra series that has yet to be written, and I'm working on the YA steampunk as well. This summer I hope to have the first drafts done on both.

Why should we read The Light of Asteria?

The Light of Asteria was originally written as a gift for my daughter. It was meant to teach what true love is supposed to be and the power of forgiveness. It's not your typical YA story in that the love interest, Gavin, isn't a "bad boy". If you like YA fantasy/romance with a new twist, I think you'll like Nora's story.

YA Feature: Introducing YA author Julia Crane

This week on Reading Away The Days I would like introduce to you guys the awesome author that is Julia Crane. Julia is the author of the Keegan's Chronicles series. Enjoy the interview and check out Julia's series, Keegan's Chronicles and show Julia some comment love.

A little about Julia and her writing career so far:

I started writing when I was very young. As an avid reader I thought it would be fun to make up my own stories. I stopped writing after I had children and pushed the dream aside. Once we moved to Dubai and I had a lot of free time my husband encouraged me to give it a shot. He always believes I can do anything. We were talking about e-publishing and he knew writing a novel was something I had always wanted to do. He told me to go for it, not for a second doubting if I could or not. So far I have had a great experience with publishing.

You are the author of Keegan's Chronicles. Can you tell me a little about the first book in the series, Coexist?

Coexist (Keegan's Chronicles #1)

Sixteen-year-old Keegan is struggling to keep her huge secret from her friends--she's an elf, descended from a long line of elves that live in secrecy alongside humans.

In elfin society, mates are predetermined but not allowed to meet until they are eighteen.  Against tradition, Keegan's brother Thaddeus told her Rourk's name because his visions warned him she'd need Rourk's protection, especially since Keegan will play a key role in the coming war between the dark and light elves.

Rourk finds himself drawn to Keegan's side every time she thinks his name. He wants to talk to her but remains in the shadows, silently guarding her every time she mentally beckons him. A twist of fate thrusts the two of them together when Rourk is forced to step up his protection and make his presence known.

An ancient prophecy deeply entwines Keegan's family and the future of their society. Somehow they must find a way to thwart fate and win the battle...without losing Keegan. With war brewing, and dark forces aligning, will Keegan and Rourk ever have the life together that they both desire?

Where did you get your idea for the Keegan Chronicles series?
I took a lot from my current life as odd as that sounds. I have a teenage daughter and all the drama that comes along with that. As a retired military wife that was a lifestyle I lived for many years. My grandmother is from Ireland and she was always telling us Irish tales so I thought it would be fun to write a book with an Irish background.

The second book in the series just released last month. Can you tell us a little about Conflicted?

Conflicted (Keegan's Chronicles #2)

Conflicted starts out where Coexist left off. In this book, Keegan's personality has reverted because of the black magic, which can be frustrating at times. She struggles not only with the black magic, but with who she should be with—the boy she likes or the one she's meant to be with.

The covers for both the books in the Keegan Chronicles series are beautiful. Who designed them and how much say did you have in the designing of the covers?
I got extremely lucky with the covers. I found Kadri Umbleja on deviantart.com. I can't speak highly enough about her skills. I told her about the book and in minutes she came up with the idea for the design. I had as much say as I wanted, but I didn't need it because what she came up with was perfect. Christine DeMaio-Rice found the perfect font to pull it all together.

Will there be any more books in the Keegan Chronicles series?
I'm almost finished book three Consumed. I'm not sure if there will be a fourth or not I have to see how I wrap this one up. I am going to do a couple of spin offs. I already have a book in mind called Anna which will go into Anna's life as a witch. She is a fun character and gets to shine a little in Conflicted.

You are also part of THE HALLOWEEN COLLECTION FROM THE INDIE ECLECTIVE. What is your short story Haunted House about?
It was so much fun to be part of the anthology. I  wrote a short story with the three girls from Keegan's Chronicles. They go to a haunted house and find more than they bargained for.

Are you currently working on any projects at the moment?
Other than Consumed, I have two other books that I am co-writing: one with Heather Adkins, and another with Talia Jager they are both amazing authors and a blast to work with.

Thanks to Julia for the awesome interview. The first two books in the Keegan Chronicles series are available now via Amazon
