Weaving Facts into Fiction (part 2)

WARNING

This post contains book excerpts and spoilers.

Yesterday I was over at Chayse @
bookreaper.blogspot.com  discussing how authors weave facts into their fiction writing to make it more believable. If you missed it, please go here to get caught up.

Like yesterdays post this scene takes place while Angelina is still in the mental institution, trying to convince her family that she isnt crazy. Adie, the ghost, is communicating through Angelina and trying to give Patty some information about their Victorian home.

Excerpt #2

“Angel, ask them if they know the house was also the first one
in town to have electricity.”
“It was? Wow! It really was top of the line, wasn’
t it?” Angelina turned her attention back to the family. “Did you guys know our house was also the first one in town to have electricity?”
Ken cleared his throat and glanced over at Patty. “Im afraid youre wrong about that one, honey. The house was built with gas lighting. We found the old gas pipes when we were doing
some remodeling.”
“You can tell Mr. Know-It-All I would know what my house
did and didnt have,” Adie scoffed. “You can also tell him the house had both.”
“Why would it have both?” Angelina asked.
“As I’
ve already said, no one else around here had electricity in their homes at the time and Cecil, bless his heart, didnt quite trust it. He said we could put it in and give it a try, but he wanted gas lighting just in case.”
“Did it work?”
“Oh, yes. It worked just fine. But truth be known, Cecil was a
little scared of it. He was afraid when he touched the light switch, it would shock him. For the longest time he wouldnt allow me to turn it on.” Adie smiled at the memory. “He had a long, rubber coated pole he would use to reach halfway across the room to turn the switch on. The whole time the electric lights were burning, Cecil wouldnt allow the rest of us anywhere near them.”

FACT

It took most people quite awhile to accept the fact that electricity could be safely used in the home. It has been reported that the 23
rd president of the US, Benjamin Harrison, and his wife were not very happy when the White House was wired for electricity. Some accounts say they refused to use the new lights and continued using the old gaslights. Other accounts claim once the new lights were turned on in the White House, Benjamin Harrison and his wife were so afraid to touch the light switches that they just left them on day and night.

I hope youve enjoyed this little peek into what goes on in a writers mind. No matter the situation, there are always elements of truth to the making of a story.

  3. Sounds like a very good read. And I didn't know any of those little tidbits about electric lights. Thanks for sharing that. It makes me smile to think of people being afraid of a light switch.
