The Origami Nun Blog Tour: My favourite childrens Guest Post & Giveaway

Today I have the pleasure of having author of The Origami Nun, Lori Olding on the blog. I thought as I was celebrating children's books this month I would ask author. Lori her top 5 childrens authors. The Origami Nun had a say in the chooses as well :)

My Favourite Childrens Authors by Lori Olding and the Origami Nun

There are so many wonderful childrens authors out there that it was hard to stick to just five, but here goes! Im a bit old-fashioned and the Origami Nun has her own ideas so between us weve come up with this:

1. We both love Enid Blyton, even though shes not really read very much these days. The nun doesnt mind about things like that though! We both love these stories because of the adventures the child heroes and heroines go on, and the mysteries they solve. Special favourites are The Secret Seven and The Famous Five series of books. The Famous Five also includes Timmy the Dog, whos lovely and really deserved his own series too. The nun would have loved that. Plus the children eat a lot of ginger beer and cake during the adventures, and you cant go wrong with that.

2. Anna Sewell who wrote Black Beauty is just brilliant. Its a book for adults as well as children, but that doesnt matter. The different characters of the horses are beautifully written and I cried a lot during some chapters. The nun had to lend me her handkerchief and still harrumphs at me now and again when she remembers.

3. I was very horsey when I was growing up and often took the nun along with me for my riding lessons. It didnt last long as she kept falling off, though of course she blames me for that … But it meant that another horsey author makes it on to our favs list. I couldnt get enough of Mary OHaras Flicka books, starting with My Friend Flicka and then going on to more books about the wild young horse Flicka and her owner Ken, in America. The relationship between boy and horse is very moving, and they have lots of interesting adventures which help them both to grow and develop together. I love that side of a story, and the nun does too.

4. I also have to choose the Narnia books of C.S. Lewis, though my favourite of them all has to be The Horse and His Boy I think a horse theme is definitely developing here! The first and best known of them is of course The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe who can resist a magical place which exists just behind something as ordinary as a wardrobe door? The nun thinks shes like that too: a magical person just hidden underneath something as ordinary as paper, and I cant help thinking shes right! Theres magic everywhere and all we have to do is look for it …

5. Finally, no childrens author list would be really complete without J. K. Rowling, would it? The story of the ordinary boy who grows up to become a wizard has enchanted us all over the last few years and its got many children and adults reading more and enjoying books more too which can only be a good thing!

So (if I can end with a nearly-poem) -  The Origami Nun and I would like to wish you a very happy reading day and we hope many good and magical stories are heading your way.

Blurb: Seven-year old Ruth can't speak, but that doesn't mean she can't think. She knows her birthday is going to be good as her beloved great-aunt has exciting plans for her. What she doesn't expect is a magical paper nun, an encounter with a bully who may not be what she seems or a school day to remember. Because, before her special day is over, Ruth is in for some very big surprises.

  1. I'm enjoying this tour. I grew up reading Enid Blyton. In fact I jumped straight from these into grown up books. Where were the YA?

THE ORIGAMI NUN is on my reading list.
