Michaela's Gift

Can you tell me a little about yourself and how you got into writing?

Well, I’m an old woman now, and I have little to keep me busy. My youngest child is nearly twelve, and my oldest will be thirty-four in August. There’s another daughter in between those two, but I spread them out on purpose. I figured that way I could play and act like a kid forever. My eleven-year-old is beginning to outgrow the really fun stuff, like mud pies and climbing trees, but now I have a granddaughter, so the fun continues.

I have always enjoyed writing. My mother wrote a lot of poetry and encouraged me so much to write down everything. Of course, I ignored that fabulous advice for years. I would dream of a poem, and it would wake me up in the night. But I didn’t listen to my mother’s advice to keep a pen and paper beside the bed, so by morning the ideas that had floated through my dreams would be gone. Now I have an entire drawer filled with scraps of paper for when the muse hits me.

But when my oldest daughter was young, I began writing to entertain her with stories. She is intellectually handicapped and didn’t learn to read until later in her school days. I found that the books she could read for herself were aimed at younger children, so I tried to write something that would be entertaining for her, but in a simpler language. She loves humor, so it was a lot of fun creating characters for her.

Can you tell us a little about your novel Michaela's Gift?

On the surface, Michaela’s Gift appears to be a rather simple story of a young girl with a special gift. She comes from a long line of artistic women who are bequeathed with the ability to bring one of their pictures to life. During the family’s visit to the grandparents’, Michaela learns about the origins of the gift, and discovers what some of her ancestors have done with it. She knows what she wants, but her mother is standing in her way.

But there are deeper layers to this story, as Shrek might say. The title indicates just a single gift. However, as you read the book, you will discover that several possibilities exist for the true meaning behind the title. I hope every reader will come away with the understanding that we all have many gifts within ourselves, and that the only way we can enjoy them is if we are willing to share with others.

Where did you get the idea for Michaela's Gift?

The setting and many of the characters come from my own life. The house where Michaela’s grandparents live was my grandparents’ house for many, many years. It still exists and is still owned and occupied by a cousin of mine, but there have been changes over the years. I prefer to remember it as Michaela sees it.

Blackie was my grandparents’ dog. Most people were terrified of her, and, like Michaela’s mom, my mother forbid me to even touch her. But there’s a lot of Michaela in me, so Blackie and I eventually became good friends.

The Alice the Goon rock is also real. My siblings and I played on it for hours at a time when we were growing up. There are huge, gray, granite boulders that protrude from the grass like rock islands in my Grandparents’ back yard. They fascinated me as a child and I wanted to dig them up just to see how big they actually were.

Granny and Grandpa are much like my own grandparents from my father’s side of the family, and the Hightowers, two characters with very minor roles, embody the spirit of love my parents left behind as part of their own special gift to me.

In your novel Michaela gets the gift of one of her drawings come to life. If you could have one of your drawings come to life what would it be?

I could never do that in a million years. My parents were both artistic, and my brother is a professional artist, but they must have adopted me, because I can’t draw anything that you could recognize. If my drawings came to life, we’d all be in major trouble. The world as we know it would change forever, and bizarre creatures would be running amok.

How does it feel to be releasing your novel Michaela's Gift?

It’s terribly exciting, of course. I never thought I would realize the ultimate goal of publication in novel form. Every time I look at my cover art, I get goose bumps. But it’s also frightening. I certainly didn’t begin writing for the money, because few people can survive on a writer’s salary, but I can’t help being plagued by nightmares of no one buying it. Ever. And then I have other nightmares where famous authors read it and write scathing reviews on Amazon and Goodreads.

Why should we read Michaela’s Gift in one sentence?

It’s a fun read with many fantasy elements, characters that are well-developed and interesting in unexpected ways, and some plot twists that I hope are surprising and entertaining.

Some bookie questions:

Fave book as a child?

My fourth grade teacher, Miss Ramo, placed The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe on my desk one day, and I fell in love – with her and with the book. She read me so well because it was the absolute perfect book for me at that particular time in my life. My next favorites after that will always be The Crystal Cave and The Hollow Hills by Mary Stewart. My mother gave me those books when I was a little older, and they sealed my fate for loving fantasy.

Fave YA author?

Oh, wow, that’s way too difficult to nail down. Possibly Susan Patron, but it could change tomorrow. I love Ms. Patron’s Lucky books. Hard Pan is a wonderful place. The characters there are so realistic, even if some of the situations may not be so much. I fell in love with Lucky’s voice and all her insecurities.

Fave YA release this year?

Ugh! Again, that’s so hard to say. I’ve read two great books by new author Cornell Deville, so if you’re talking just 2012 books, I might say Cannibal Island. It’s a steampunk adventure that was lots of fun in a very creepy way. If you mean within the last year, I will go with Okay For Now by Gary D. Schmidt. I’ve heard some people express that they didn’t care that much for it, but I personally think it’s an amazing story of a brilliant young man who has everything going against him. He overcomes many of those obstacles, but in totally real and plausible ways. Does he have a chip on his shoulder? Absolutely. But he had a lot of help getting it there.

Fave book of all time?

I think it’s going to be impossible to beat Gone With the Wind. I could never get tired of that story.

If you could invite two characters from a book to dinner who would it be and why?

I would love to invite Laura from the Little House series, and Winn-Dixie. I know they would fall in love with each other, and we’d have a great time laughing and showing Laura all the modern conveniences in my 108 year old farm house. We still have the outhouse, though, in the event she was too uncomfortable with the idea of a flush toilet.

Last word from the author....

Only a profuse thank you for the opportunity to talk with you today. This is my very first interview as an author, and you’ve made it very enjoyable.

Author Interview: Brina Courtney

Check out my interview with author of the Cryptid Tales Series, Brina Courtney!

Can you tell me a little about yourself and how you got into writing?

I began writing only a year ago because I lost my teaching jobs due to cut backs at my urban school district. I was then called back and have been teaching 1st grade this school year. Starting next week I will be writing full time though. I also coach high school cheering and I used to be really involved in the Miss America Organization. My husband and I just celebrated our one year anniversary and we have two small (but noisy) dogs.

Can you tell us a little about your novel Reveal (Cryptid Tales 1) ?

The story is from the perspective of Shay, a hugh school senior who has a secret. She can speak to ghosts. Her best friend is actually a ghost himself. In Reveal, she learns more about herself and who she is meant to be. Not to mention her hottie boyfriend, Hugh. In Capture we learn more about her past, and Shay struggles to save her future from the destructive Malsumis, an evil being seeking to destroy all cryptids, the race of beings Shay has to save.

Reveal (Cryptid Tales)

Where did you get the idea for the Crypid tales series?

From a Bones episode actually... lol. They were studying a chupachabra, which is a type of cryptid, or animal not yet recognized by western culture. I'm pretty sure it drinks goat's blood and eats people, that would totally gross Shay out, don't tell her that's where I got the idea, k?

Who designed the cover of Reveal and how much say did you have in the designing of the cover?

SMReine, an amazing YA dark paranormal author. Isn't it fabulous? I got a model who I knew through pageants, and the rest of her movie magic. I got a whole lot of say thanks to my designer, she's fab.

Capture the second book in the series is also released with the third book Elevate expected to publish this fall. Where that be the last book in the series?

Capture is doing so well, so much that Elevate will not be the last book in the series. Elevate will follow Lacey, a character from Capture (can't tell ya what she is until you read Capture!). The last (eh? maybe?) book is currently being called Settle, and it will be the last to follow Shay. There may be a spinoff series... can't give away too much just yet. Watch my blog for details.

Are you currently working on any other projects?

I'm at the beginning stages of Summer in Salem, an Electi novel. This will be my next set of books due out later this summer. Wait until you meet Teagan, she is so different from Shay!

Why should we read the Crypid tales in one sentence?

So I don't really know what to say, so I asked a few readers and this is what one said, "Reveal is a totally EPIC and mind blowing read that will have you all swooning and tearing through the pages." Thanks Tiff! (She's a special kind of awesomesauce)

Thanks so much for having me today!

Weaving Facts into Fiction (part 2)

WARNING

This post contains book excerpts and spoilers.

Yesterday I was over at Chayse @
bookreaper.blogspot.com  discussing how authors weave facts into their fiction writing to make it more believable. If you missed it, please go here to get caught up.

Like yesterday’s post this scene takes place while Angelina is still in the mental institution, trying to convince her family that she isn’t crazy. Adie, the ghost, is communicating through Angelina and trying to give Patty some information about their Victorian home.

Excerpt #2

“Angel, ask them if they know the house was also the first one
in town to have electricity.”
“It was? Wow! It really was top of the line, wasn’
t it?” Angelina turned her attention back to the family. “Did you guys know our house was also the first one in town to have electricity?”
Ken cleared his throat and glanced over at Patty. “I’m afraid you’re wrong about that one, honey. The house was built with gas lighting. We found the old gas pipes when we were doing
some remodeling.”
“You can tell Mr. Know-It-All I would know what my house
did and didn’t have,” Adie scoffed. “You can also tell him the house had both.”
“Why would it have both?” Angelina asked.
“As I’
ve already said, no one else around here had electricity in their homes at the time and Cecil, bless his heart, didn’t quite trust it. He said we could put it in and give it a try, but he wanted gas lighting just in case.”
“Did it work?”
“Oh, yes. It worked just fine. But truth be known, Cecil was a
little scared of it. He was afraid when he touched the light switch, it would shock him. For the longest time he wouldn’t allow me to turn it on.” Adie smiled at the memory. “He had a long, rubber coated pole he would use to reach halfway across the room to turn the switch on. The whole time the electric lights were burning, Cecil wouldn’t allow the rest of us anywhere near them.”

FACT

It took most people quite awhile to accept the fact that electricity could be safely used in the home. It has been reported that the 23
rd president of the US, Benjamin Harrison, and his wife were not very happy when the White House was wired for electricity. Some accounts say they refused to use the new lights and continued using the old gaslights. Other accounts claim once the new lights were turned on in the White House, Benjamin Harrison and his wife were so afraid to touch the light switches that they just left them on day and night.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this little peek into what goes on in a writer’s mind. No matter the situation, there are always elements of truth to the making of a story.

Angelina's Secret

But even Josie can't help her deal with Shelly, the spirit of a confused teenager, and things go very, very wrong. When Angelina finds herself in a psychiatric hospital, she faces a choice: she can spend the rest of her life pretending to be someone she isn't, or she can embrace who she is and take a chance that she may never get to go home.

Lies Beneath by Anne Greenwood Brown release day interview!

Today is the release of Anne Greenwood Brown's debut novel Lies Beneath! Check out my interview with the author and show it some comment love and don't forget to check out Lies Beneath!

Can you tell me a little about yourself and how you got into writing?

I was writing books when I was 5 years old. My dad would "publish" them on his office copy machine, and I would try to sell them around my neighborhood for a dime. As I got older, I was a dedicated journal writer, and I wrote a TON of terrible poetry. Lily Hancock, one of the main characters in LIES BENEATH is a bit of a reflection of me in that regard. I think I write YA fiction today because my high school years were some of my favorites. I married my "high school sweetheart," and my own kids are now in high school. It's such an exciting, high drama time of life!

Author Anne at the age of 5 when she "published" her first book!

Can you tell us a little about your debut novel, Lies Beneath?

Absolutely! LIES BENEATH is a YA novel about murderous mermaids on Lake Superior, which is the biggest of the Great Lakes in North America. It's classified as paranormal romance, and there is a bit of that, but in my mind it's an evolution story. It's about a merman who adapts to a new situation and evolves over time, leaving his animalistic, predatory nature behind and becoming human. Here's what the flap copy says:

Calder White lives in the cold, clear waters of Lake Superior, the only brother in a family of murderous mermaids. To survive, Calder and his sisters prey on humans, killing them to absorb their energy. But this summer the underwater clan targets Jason Hancock out of pure revenge. They blame Hancock for their mother's death and have been waiting a long time for him to return to his family's homestead on the lake. Hancock has a fear of water, so to lure him in, Calder sets out to seduce Hancock's daughter, Lily. Easy enough—especially as Calder has lots of practice using his irresistible good looks and charm on unsuspecting girls. Only this time Calder screws everything up: he falls for Lily—just as Lily starts to suspect that there's more to the monsters-in-the-lake legends than she ever imagined. And just as his sisters are losing patience with him.

Where did you get the idea for Lies Beneath?

I was actually writing a contemporary story set on Lake Superior. One of the characters worked on the ferry boat, and for several nights in a row I kept dreaming that he dove off the rail of the ferry. Lake Superior is bitterly cold, so this would be a stupid thing to do. Still, night after night, he kept diving. Then one night he dove and burst out with this amazing tail! I woke up with the first line of the novel in my head: "I hadn't killed anyone all winter, and I have to say I felt pretty good about that."

The cover for Lies Beneath is beautiful. Who designed it and did you have much say in the designing process?

Random House art design came up with the image. I had a little say, like, I wasn't a fan of the original font for the title (it was too girly) and there was a strange shadow I asked that they get rid of (which they did).

How does it feel to be releasing you debut novel?

Um… amazing! It's such a long wait. First the years of writing, working on the craft, and trying to break in. Then, after the sale, you still have to wait 18 months to see it on shelves! It's like the longest pregnancy ever. When book baby hits stores, I'll probably cry.

Lies Beneath is the first book in the series. How many will there be?

Two for sure and hopefully three. I'm finishing writing the end of the trilogy now. Book 2 is called DEEP BETRAYAL. It's a continuation of the story, but told from Lily Hancock's point of view.

Why should we read Lies Beneath in one sentence?

Because as much as we all love Disney's Little Mermaid, that's not what mermaids are really about.

Author Interview: Leigh Micheal & FREE Ebook download

I am excited to have author Leigh Michael on my blog today! Leigh is here today to tell us a little about herself and all about her awesome debut novel Sprite which I really enjoyed. Sprite (Annabelle's Story Part One)

Can you tell me a little about yourself and how you got into writing?

Hey there! My name is Leigh Michael. I’ve been writing since I was a little girl. In fact, when I wasn’t reading, I was trying my own hand at short stories and poems. Although, if I had to pick one point when I knew I wanted to be a writer, I’d say it was in the fifth grade when my school participated in a print ad contest. I ended up walking away with more than just first place; I walked away with career aspirations for the future. After school, I dove right into the advertising world as a copywriter. In this role, I see crafting messages as a big puzzle that's just waiting to be solved. I've found that writing a novel is quite similar and it’s been a great next step in my writing career. I love what I do.

Can you tell us about your new YA novel Sprite (Annabelle's Story Part One)?

Sprite is a fast-paced, paranormal adventure with lots of twists and turns and touch of romance. Much of the background for the story is based on Greek mythology and folklore, but it’s set in present day. Annabelle is our protagonist who quickly realizes that she’s more than just human. She also happens to be the only one who can fulfill a prophecy started long ago. You can get all the details about Annabelle’s Story at www.LeighMichaelBooks.com. Also, Sprite will be FREE on Amazon from June 11 through June 13 (PST). Go get it!

Where did you get the idea for Sprite (Annabelle's Story Part One)?

Sprite happens to be my debut novel. Deciding to write within the YA genre was the easy part, but finding a subject matter to focus on took some thought. Although I highly enjoy reading about vampires, werewolves, and witchcraft (and one day plan to put my own spin on the vampire world), I wanted to make my debut in a topic that wasn’t quite as saturated. In the end, I decided on water spirits and the underwater realm. From there, I couldn’t get my ideas down on paper fast enough.

I really like the cover of the novel. It's simple but very striking I love that it is in black and white. Who designed it and how much say did you have in the design?

I searched for hours and hours to find the perfect image, so I’m very pleased to hear that people like it. I happen to love it as well. I think readers will see why once they get to the final page of Sprite. Without fail, the last few sentences bring the cover to life. Of course, this powerful cover wouldn’t be possible without the ever-so-talented Carissa Katz. She’s an extremely gifted designer (and also a close friend) who brought my vision to life.

In your novel Annabelle is a half-human, half-sprite. If you could be anything half human half something else what would it be and why?

Okay, don’t laugh. I’d want to be half-bird. I just love the idea of being able to pick up and fly whenever I wanted. Although, I’m not crazy about the idea of looking like a bird, so, perhaps, I’d like to be able to morph from human to bird at my convenience.

Sprite is part one of the story when can we see the release of the second part?

Part two of Annabelle’s Story is called Kin. It picks up at a huge turning point in Annabelle’s adventure. I’m currently engrossed in writing the manuscript and hope to release it at the end of summer/beginning of fall 2012. If you sign up for updates on my website, you’ll be the first to know when it’s available.

Why should we read Sprite in one sentence?

I think you should read Sprite because… I’m dying to know if you’re Team Blake or Team Adrian. You’ll have to email me at LeighMichaelBooks@gmail.com and let me know!

The Unsacred Blog Tour: Guest Post

Welcome to my tour stop on The Unsacred Gift Blog Tour. This is the final day of the blog tour and I hope you checked out all the other stops. Today the author has put together a guest post of how it all started! Enjoy!

How It All Started

One day I thought to myself, I could write a book. Then I started laughing and told myself to get my head out of the clouds. I told my mom that I wanted to write a book. She looked at me like I lost my mind and kept washing clothes. I began writing words like I always do and never go back to it. I wrote one page and then I left it in my computer. I didn’t think that I would ever go back to the document until a couple of days later Sicily “Sissy” Monroe whispered in my ear.

Two days passed by and on July 18, 2010 someone started talking to me in my head. I thought for sure I needed to be admitted to the mental hospital. I was at work when the “voice” began speaking. I got out of my set and looked around to see if anyone was around. No one was there, so I sat back down. Then it spoke again. What is it? What do you want? I though. Then the “voice” just started talking to me. So, I began to write everything down.

Hours later I wrote 4 chapters and I couldn’t stop. I went home to tell my mother about this voice that was talking to me. She didn’t look at me like I was crazy this time. I told her about the story and the plot.

“What should I call this book?” I asked her. She looked up at the ceiling thinking. We sat in silence for about ten minutes, and then she spoke. “How about The Unsacred Gift.” I stood in the middle of the living room floor thinking. “Uhmm...I like it!” Two and a half months later The Unsacred Gift was finished.

For the record I did not plan all of the characters out. Sissy just popped out of nowhere and made a name for herself. When I thought about her mother, Tina, I knew that I had to have a character that had a similar personally like my mother’s. Although the character is not exactly like my mother, they have the same interest like the Food Network and cooking.

Mark (which is Tina’s fiancée) is more laid back and has a loving heart. I didn’t want her mother to be alone, so I decided to add a male character. Sissy had no knowledge of Mark until she went back home, but sparks flared when she was giving the news about their engagement.

My co-worker read bits and pieces of the book as I was creating it. She said that Sissy needed some type of happiness, so that is when I created Chris. I didn’t know if I wanted to kill him off to make matters worse, or just have Sissy run him off herself. I guess you have to read the book to find out...LOL!

Then there is the Monroe family Tiyanne (Auntie), Tyler (Uncle), Grandma Monroe (Grandmother), and Heaven & Halo (cousins), whom you will meet at Granny’s birthday party in The Unsacred Gift.

Book Blurb:

Have you ever had a dream that came to life? How about losing the one you love and not being able to save them? What about a gift that you were cursed with? Well image having all three like Sicily "Sissy" Monroe.

"Some might say what I have is a gift. I say, I want to return it." Sissy declares.

Sicily "Sissy" Monroe has all the qualities of a perfect young lady. She is almost where she wants to be in life. But lying deep in the pupil of her eyes hold something that she cannot get rid of which interferes with her plans. She fights everyday with no one but herself. After having her first vision at age six of her sister's (Misty) disappearance and the dreams of failing to save her, Sissy wants no part in another person's fate. For years Sissy tried hard to avoid contact with people because she feared foreseeing their death. In keeping with this, she tries to stay away from her family. Little did Sissy know she could not run from her past, or her gift. She hopes someone will put her out of her misery, but she will soon discover that her visions and dreams were just a mere image of herself.
