Interview: Lisa Gail Green

The Author: Lisa Gail Green

I write paranormal and fantasy. I would most definitely have a werewolf for a pet if I weren't allergic. You can find me loafing around Twitter with my Tweeps or on any of the blogs I participate in. Paranormalpointofview.blogspot.com,Firstfivepagesworkshop.blogspot.com, scene13ers.wordpress.com, and EnchantedInkpot.com. It’s a wonder I have time to write!

Writing

I’ve been writing on and off since I was seven. I used to write (and still do) poetry and short stories, but even before that I used to sit for hours in my room and make up stories in my head, which is basically the same thing as writing without a computer or paper.

The Book: THE BINDING STONE (book 1 in the DJINN series)

Tricked into slavery by the man she loved, the Djinni Leela has an eternity to regret her choices.

Awakened in the prison of her adolescent body, she finds a new master in possession of the opal that binds her. But seventeen-year-old Jered is unlike any she’s seen. His kindness makes Leela yearn to trust again, to allow herself a glimmer of hope.

Could Jered be strong enough to free her from the curse of the Binding Stone?

How does it feel to be releasing you novel?

I can’t even express how exciting this is! It takes a long time to put out a book, so by the time it releases you’re pretty attached. But then it’s also nerve wracking because you’ll find out exactly what people think and writers as a species tend to be a bit self-doubting on occasion.

Can you describe your protagonist Leela in less than 140 characters?

Leela is a powerful Djinni tricked by the man she loved and sentenced to an eternity of servitude. Needless to say she’s feeling a little scorned.

If you could encourage anyone to pick up DJINN: THE BINDING STONE what would you say?

The book is full of magic, adventure, romance, and unforgettable characters. Try it out if you like any kind of fantasy!

Bookie Questions:

Favourite genre and why?

YA Paranormal and fantasy in general. I love being able to escape to new worlds (even within our own) where anything is possible and average people can turn out to be anything but.

Favourite YA author and why?

Libba Bray is my hero. She is not only an amazing author, she’s an amazing person. She’s full of insight and humor.

Debut author/ upcoming author we should check out?

There are so many!! I have to say Sarah Skilton because her book is NOT fantasy and I STILL loved it. Seriously though, BRUISED is amazing.

Favourite 2012 read and why?

Ooh, that’s really tough. I didn’t read as much last year due to a difficult pregnancy and then… well, you know what that leads to, right? LOL. But I did fit in a few and I have to say I LOVED Daughter of Smoke and Bone.

A book series you love and why?

Oh my there are so many! The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare, the Hunger Games trilogy, and Harry Potter of course. Probably for the same reasons other people love them. They combine great characters, plot, and world beautifully.

The Earth is For Dancing Blog Tour- Interview & #Giveaway- $50 Amazon Giftcard

Interview with author Lorca Damon & #Giveaway!

Author: Lorca Damon
I am a teacher, writer, and all-around thing-doer. Not professionally. Well, the teaching thing and the writing thing I do professionally, but the doer-thing is just stuff that I... do. Like triathlons and cookie-baking contests.
Writing
I got into writing because I finally had enough to say that I could envision a full-length story unfolding. I’ve played with short stories, just for myself, but had this character that I just couldn’t finish with until I told his whole story. After writing one book and putting it aside, I participated in my first NaNoWriMo, and the urge to keep telling the whole story just took over.
The Book:The Earth is For Dancing

Blurb:

Sam is a fifteen-year-old drug orphan living with her custodial grandmother who is stricken with late-stage Alzheimer's. She struggles to fill the role of caregiver to her grandmother while keeping her little family a secret from the authorities who would send Gamma to a state facility and Sam to foster care. Just because her life isn't hard enough, there are still boys to have crushes on, essays to write for horrible English teachers, and a squad full of bullies to torment her on a daily basis.

I teach in a maximum security juvenile detention facility, and my characters are so often created from a student or a student’s experiences. I remember one of my students coming to me panic-stricken, wanting to know if I could call his grandmother. That is absolutely against the rules, but he teared up and said, “I just need someone to check on her, I don’t know if she’s okay.” I asked him why she wouldn’t be okay, and he said, “Someone has to feed her.” I must have looked confused, because the whole story came tumbling out. He is the only care-giver for his elderly grandmother, the woman who raised him when his own parents took off. Now that she has advanced Alzheimer’s, there’s no one to care for her. He had been taking care of her for years.

That one interaction would not stop bugging me. I kept coming back to what life must be like for both the boy and his grandmother, and how our society is set up to not help them or not keep them together. Requesting assistance would mean he gets sent to foster care and his grandmother ends up in some state-run facility. So he toughed it out and did his best, which unfortunately, meant breaking the law to feed them both.
Can you describe your protangnist Sam in 140 characters?
Afraid but determined, Sam tries to swim upstream in order to take care of her Gamma until Alzheimer's finally takes her away for good.

Why should we pick up The Earth is for Dancing?

One of the crappiest reviews I got for Earth didn’t just piss me off because the person didn’t like my book or my characters. The reviewer actually said something like, “It’s a really good book, but it’s just too unbelievable. Stuff like this just doesn’t happen.” Really? This isn’t happening right now? Sixty million adults in this country have their grandchildren living with them, either through actual custody or shared housing. What’s going to happen to everyone involved when the adult needs the care, instead of the other way around? While this book is entirely a work of fiction, it is based on a very real, very frightening reality for a lot of teenagers, and I hope it opens people’s eyes to the struggles and pressures teens often face.

They uncover a connection between the two crimes and attempt to bring this information to the police, only to be reprimanded for meddling in the investigation. Not only are the girls upset by the admonition, but they also struggle with the fact that their exuberant investigating could provide a legal loophole allowing the killer to go free. Chapter One

What do you mean you lost them?” Sarah Cole fidgeted as she waited for Agent Gray to answer. I cant believe it! He lost the only clue to our parents location. What is wrong with this picture? Agitated, Sarah shifted in her seat and chewed on her lip. She was uncomfortable in the folding chair and rearranged her petite frame so she wouldnt feel the cold metal against her bare legs. Shivering, she glanced around the all-too-familiar room.
The gray cement block walls no longer gave her that creepy, closed-in feeling shed used to get when she first came to the interrogation rooms. She remembered the first time shed been in that tiny space. It had been the day shed discovered the Cat Ladys dead body. Sarah shuddered at the memory and then smiled when she remembered forming the Super Spies and bringing the Cat Lady Killer to justice. Glancing around the room again, she realized shed been in this room quite a bit these last few weeks, not only during the Cat Lady investigation, but the High School Bomber investigation as well. Shivering again, Sarah rubbed her arms but she really wasnt cold. Her mind filled with the image of the bomber the Super Spies had helped apprehend just a week earlier.
Wow! Was it just last week?
She tugged at a lock of her honey colored hair, then brushed it away with an impatient hand. She sighed and glanced at her younger sister. Lacey sat beside her with her legs crossed, jiggling her foot at such a rapid rate it seemed like her whole body was electrified. She caught Sarahs eye and for a moment her eyes glittered like emeralds before she shifted her gaze to Aunt June, who had placed her hand on Laceys leg in what appeared to be an attempt to quiet her. Sarah shifted in her chair and sighed again. Are we ever going to find Mom and Dad?
A commotion out in the hall drew everyones attention. Sarah leaned forward and craned her neck to see what was happening.

Chief, weve got an OD!” An officer yelled.

What?” Chief Johnson yelled as he rushed by. “An OD on what? Give me the details.”

The parents found their son unconscious in his room this morning, and an empty bottle of prescription medication on his bedside table.”

What was it?” Chief Johnson asked.

Its Myodine.”

Who makes it?”

Ah… Piper Drugs.”

Call Poison Control with the name and manufacturer and ask them what to do about an overdose. Instruct the parents to get their son to the hospital pronto,” Chief Johnson ordered.

Theyve brought him here.”
What?” Chief Johnson exclaimed.

The sound of policemen rushing through the hall pulled Sarah and her sister out of their seats. They hurried to the door, unable to stifle their curiosity. Peering down the corridor, Sarah caught a glimpse of a young man sagging between two officers as they desperately tried to keep him on his feet. One officer gently slapped his face while the other officers held him up. The young man blinked and then gagged, puking on the officer in front of him.
The rancid stench of fresh vomit filled the air. While plugging her nose, Sarah ducked back inside the interrogation room, followed by her sister. Sarah closed the door, hoping it would keep the smell from penetrating the room.

Did you hear that, Lace? Piper Drugs! Thats the company Dad works for,” Sarah whispered in her sisters ear before proceeding back to her seat.

Lacey opened her mouth to speak, but closed it when Agent Gray cleared his throat and motioned for them to sit down.
He continued his conversation as if they hadnt been interrupted. We were on our way to the location of the ping… but before we got there it disappeared.”

So, what does that mean? Did you find our parents or what?” Sarah blurted out as she sat down. She stared into Agent Grays icy blue eyes, trying to read his mind.

Book Blast: Yours Affectionately, Jane Austen by Sally Smith O'Rourke- $50 Amazon Giftcard

Yours Affectionately, Jane Austen

Was Mr. Darcy real? Is time travel really possible? For pragmatic Manhattan artist Eliza Knight the answer to both questions is absolutely, Yes! And Fitzwilliam Darcy of Pemberley Farms, Virginia is the reason why!

His tale of love and romance in Regency England leaves Eliza in no doubt that Fitz Darcy is the embodiment of Jane Austen’s legendary hero. And she’s falling in love with him. But can the man who loved the inimitable Jane Austen ever love average, ordinary Eliza Knight?
Eliza’s doubts grow, perhaps out of proportion, when things start to happen in the quiet hamlet of Chawton, England; events that could change everything. Will the beloved author become the wedge that divides Fitz and Eliza or the tie that binds them?

Praise for Yours Affectionately, Jane Austen

O’Rourke creates a world that defies cynicism and demands suspension of disbelief – even in this age of doubt and hyper-realism. Sheer escapism at its best. Clever, charming and affectionate. ~Jocelyn Bury …the reader must tenaciously read on rather than put the book down to satisfy their hunger for the story to resolve, which it does in characteristically Jane Austen fashion. ~Erin Murdock

Author Bio: Sally Smith O'Rourke

Sally Smith O’Rourke is a surgical scrub nurse at the City of Hope national cancer research hospital in Duarte, California and resides in the near-by Victorian village of Monrovia. With her late husband, author Michael O’Rourke (aka F.M. O’Rourke) Smith O’Rourke owned and operated a medical advertising company where she used her diverse talents to produce and co-write teaching films and videos. Working not only with major medical and surgical manufacturing companies but also network television. These endeavors ultimately led to a collaboration on two feature films (direct to video) and three published novels. The wife and husband writing team of Sally Smith and Michael O’Rourke, being long-time fans of Jane Austen, wrote The Man Who Loved Jane Austen released by Kensington Books in 2006. Kensington followed that very successful effort with The Maidenstone Lighthouse in 2007 and Christmas at Sea Pines Cottage in 2009, both also collaborative projects by Smith and O’Rourke. Published after her partner and spouse’s untimely death in 2001, the publisher chose not to use the names Michael O’Rourke and Sally Smith (as the manuscripts were presented), releasing all three books under Sally Smith O’Rourke. Yours Affectionately, Jane Austen is Sally Smith O’Rourke’s first solo novel.

Excerpt from Into The Sprial by Erin Danzer

“You sure about this?” Gary asked as his latex gloves snapped into place. Ronnie draped her hair over her left shoulder, looking back at him over her right. She knew he was just looking out for her, probably as part of his allegiance to Brian, but she was tired of having this conversation. She knew what she wanted.

“Yes, I’m sure. I havent been haunting this place all summer for my health.” she stated. “My body; my mind; my life.”

As she said the words, Ronnie realized the triple spiral was the perfect symbol for her new beginning. Getting this tattoo was the first step to regaining control over herself, her mind and ultimately, her life. No more would she only be seen as Brians little sister. Her parents and everyone around her would have to see her as the young woman she was becoming. She bit her lower lip, hiding a smile as she settled against the back of the chair again. If everything worked out the way she wanted to, shed have a new boyfriend soon, too.

In addition to her novels, Erin writes a monthly short story serial, The Cassandra Serafin Chronicles, posting alternately on her blog and in Literary Lunes bi-monthly online magazine.
