St. Vladimir's Academy isn't just any boarding school- it's a hidden place where vampires are educated in the ways of magic and half-human teens train to protect them. Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir a bodyguard for her best friend Lissa, a Moroi Vampire Princess. They've been on the run, but now they're being dragged back to St. Vladimir's- the very place where they're most in danger...

Rose and Lissa become enmeshed in forbidden romance, the Academy's ruthless social scene, and unspeakable nighttime rituals. But they must be careful lest the Strigoi- the world's fiercest and most dangerous vampires- make Lissa one of them forever.

Review

This is a book I have been wanting to read for the last five or six years and just never got around to it. Over the years I have read many vampire books. I was one of the twi hards who seeked out all books vampire related but this is one I seemed to have missed.

I did commit a crime with this book I watched the movie before reading the book. I have to say I still really enjoyed the book and actually from reading the book I think the movie was a great adaptation, it stuck very well to the book.

Enough babbling on to my review.

The Mythology

I really did enjoy this book,  it was great introduction to a vampire series.  It explained all the mythology of this world clearly. It's a urban fantasy book so the vampire are among humans in a modern day world but the humans are unaware of them. In this series there are two types of vampires Moroi and Strigio. Moroi are vampires who are alive they are not immortal, they have superhuman senses and need blood to survive. Strigio are dead they don't care who they kill to get their blood, they cant stand sunlight, they are what we would think of as typical "vampires". Then there's Dhampir's they are half Moroi, half human and are guardians who help protect the Moroi. It may sound complicated but I found the mythology easily explained and this helped me navigate the world easily.

The Story

The Story was very engaging and it is written in a way that had you anticipating what was going to happen next , it has little flashbacks that shows how the characters came to be where they are in the beginning of the story. I found this style of writing very enjoyable.

The Characters

This book had some kick ass characters. The Story is told though Rose, a Dhampir's eyes and she is so kick ass and funny. Her dialogue was great to read, she has a sarcasm that had me laughing out loud, she's strong and her friendship with her best friend, Moroi , Lissa was great to watch. Lissa has a very gentle nature and needs Rose. Both girls went on a journey in this book and I can't wait to see how they continue to develop.

The guys in this are swoon worthy. Christian is your dark, sarcastic, Moroi loner and then you have Dimitri who is super strong, handsome, older,  is a bad ass Dhampir and is definitely a new book boyfriend of mine. Note: There is no long triangle thus far

With its assortment of main and side characters this book has something for everyone. A great and enjoyable storyline. A new take to me on vampires, great romance, and a kick ass heroine who I can just tell is going to get stronger and better in the rest of the series.
