A touchingly honest, candidly hysterical memoir from breakout teen author Maya Van Wagenen
Stuck at the bottom of the social ladder at pretty much the lowest level of people at school who aren’t paid to be here,” Maya Van Wagenen decided to begin a unique social experiment: spend the school year following a 1950s popularity guide, written by former teen model Betty Cornell. Can curlers, girdles, Vaseline, and a strand of pearls help Maya on her quest to be popular?
The real-life results are painful, funny, and include a wonderful and unexpected surprise—meeting and befriending Betty Cornell herself. Told with humor and grace, Maya’s journey offers readers of all ages a thoroughly contemporary example of kindness and self-confidence.
I really liked Popular: Vintage Wisdom for a Modern Geek. Author Maya Van Wagenen took a 1950's guide to being popular and undertook a social experiment to see if the methods then, could make someone popular in today's society. Undertaking this social experiment took bravery and determination to see though. Taking the 1950's guide and following the steps in this day and age was a great concept.
I loved that each month there was a different topic from the guide Maya followed and each month they got riskier and riskier. I loved following Maya's journey of self discovery and "popularity. Betty's rules to popularity from the 1950's really can be applied to this era and it was crazy to see.
The book was an inspirational, fun read that gives you an insight to what being popular really means. Maya is a wonderful young girl and if everyone of us acted just a little like Maya this world would be a better place!
