Author Interview: Corrine Jackson

Can you tell me a little about yourself and how you got into writing?

I was a shy, quiet kid who wrote short stories as a kid. I wanted to write, but never considered it a viable career so I went another direction, including a past career in graphic design and my current work in marketing. However, I couldnt get rid of the bug. I have a masters in English and a professor told me I had talent, which led to me applying to an MFA program. That was in 2008 and it was the first time I started taking my writing seriously. I wrote three novels over the course of my MFA program TOUCHED, IF I LIE, and TOUCHED 2. The writing thing definitely has a hold on me now.

If I LieYou released you debut novel If I lie in August, can you tell us a little about it?

IF I LIE is about a girl who is condemned as a traitor by her small military town when they think she is guilty of cheating on her boyfriend, a Marine who has gone MIA. What they dont know is that she could clear her name, except shes protecting someone.

Where did you get the idea for the novel?

I began with the idea of a girl who was getting condemned for a secret she was keeping to protect someone she loved. I liked the idea of exploring honor and loyalty. I thought it would be a reimagining of The Scarlet Letter. Then, the story began to shift and change. My uncle had been hurt and Id visited him at the VA Hospital. As a child and a teen, Id watched another uncle struggle with the aftermath of two tours in Vietnam. My observations about both uncles stayed with me. Everything simmered and stewed for weeks before I knew what Quinns secret would be and what the story would be about. In the end, it all came together in a way that surprises me. I didnt know I had this story in me, but Im very proud of it.

How has the response been for the book thus far?

People have written me to say they have been really touched or even cried. Thats a huge compliment to an author, and it means a lot. I love hearing from readers about the things that they connected to in the story.

Touched (Sense Thieves, #1)
In November you released Touched the first book in your YA paranormal romance trilogy. Can you tell us a little about it?

TOUCHED is a romantasy about a girl who has the ability to heal people with her touch. Unfortunately, every injury or illness Remy heals becomes hers, and shes grown up using her ability to hide the violence her stepfather inflicts on her and her mother. After a particularly brutal confrontation lands her in the hospital, Remy is forced to live with the father who abandoned her and his perfect family. The story deals with how she adjusts to her new life with all of her old scars. Plus there are people threatening her because of what she can do, and a boy who has powers that put her in danger. TOUCHED has a lot of action and romance.

You have written YA contemporary, paranormal and romance is there any other genres you would like to try?

Ive thought of trying my hand at a middle grade novel, and I have a couple of ideas for some adult fiction novels. For now, Im focused on contemporary and paranormal, though.

Thanks for having me on your blog!

Both If I Lie and Touched are available to buy now!

YA Feature: L.B. Shire

 The Author: L.B. Shire

I've been writing for as long as I can remember. I recently found old notebooks with stories I had penned as a child hidden away in a storage bin in our barn. Those were quite interesting to look through. They consisted of adventurous women, horses and in most of the stories handsome cowboys :) Not a whole lot has changed over the years!

When not writing, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, camping and summer BBQ's. I love to ride my horses in the mountains around my home, and when not doing any of those activities, I read and write!

Writing:

Two years ago I made the decision that I wanted to try and become published. I read everything I could get my hands on of the craft of writing, read other's blogs, and researched as much as I could. My first YA short story was published in August of 2012 and is titled: The Dark Blood Brotherhood Book One: First Bite. Book two is titled: The Choice and was released November 14th. The third installment should be released next year sometime.

The books: The Dark Blood Brotherhood series!

Inspiration behind the story- This story came about after several weeks of coyotes howling every night on my back property. Each night I would wake to those lonesome calls into the clear night sky with my muse screaming to be let loose. Before I knew it, The Dark Blood Brotherhood was born.

Here's the Blurb:

Madaline 'Maddie' Reed spends her restless and lonely nights exploring the eerie forest that borders her relatives manor. It is here in the unnerving shadows and darkness of these woods the fight for her life begins, and one kiss will change her fate forever.

Ashtine is an orphan taken in by the Dark Blood Brotherhood and trained to be a bounty hunter; he tracks and kills rogue wolves that hunt unsuspecting mortals who dare wander into the forests. This is where he finds Maddie. With one bite, he changes the course of his destiny. With one kiss, the course of his life.

Any book news?

Book Two in The Dark Blood Brotherhood, The Choice has been released and available on Amazon, both my books First Bite and The Choice are only 0.99 cents!

YA Feature: Erin Danzer

The Author

Ive been writing since I was a kid in grade school. I entered a school-wide contest and found my love for the creation of the written word. Ive also been a reader all my life, so I almost think becoming a writer was a natural course for me.

When Im not writing or reading, Im spending time with my husband and two boys. And our cat; my boys wont let me leave him out. ;)

I also participate in NaNoWriMo every November. Last month was my 8th win in 9 years. I love the people I meet and still, just the challenge of writing 50,000 words in 30 days.

Writing

As I said, I started in grade school. On and off up until I got married, I wrote stories, novels and even tried my hand at poetry. I took a Creative Writing class in college, where I wasnt the best in the room but I learned a lot. After I got married and especially after the kids came, life got in the way and even though I continued to write, my priorities were changed up. Then, almost two years ago, I realized my life was not what I wanted it to be. After some soul searching, a few serious talks with myself and my husband, I decided following my dreams of being a published author is what I would do with the rest of my life. And here I am.

The Book: Into the Spiral

I have to admit, when I was trying to figure out what to write, I had just finished reading The Mortal Instruments trilogy (before CoFA came out), and I said to myself: “I want to write like Cassandra Clare.” Soon after that, I had this girl pop in my head. She was young, about to start high school and felt like she would spontaneously combust because of all the pressure on her from her parents, living in the shadow of her older brother and being in love with her best friend whos completely clueless. That girl became Ronnie, my heroine. Into the Spiral tells her story about meeting Gavin, a boy from another planet, and how Ronnie wants to become her own person. Filled with romance, angst and everything I love about teenagers (including their ability to believe anything, as my editor pointed out), in the end, Ronnie must decide between following her destiny to help save Gavins planet or returning to her life as a “normal” girl.

Getting to know the authors book habits!

Favourite book genre and why?

Young Adult. I love first love, all the teenage angst, seeing kids “grow up”, the uncertainty that comes with being a teenager and the choices they make. Of course, I do prefer my YA to have some kind of supernatural aspect to it, though I dont pass up a good contemporary novel either.

Favourite book series and why?

I have a few favorite series, but Im only going to name two. The Mortal Instruments, because Cassandra Clare is amazing, her world is filled with romance, action, adventure, and her characters are so real its like I could walk out my door and meet them on the street. (okay, total fantasy, but it could happen! LOL) I also love the Significance series by Shelley Crane. Her two MCs, Maggie and Caleb, are again very real people to me. I love their relationship and everything that happens to them, what it means to be a significant (which is a soul mate, in a way, for those who dont know), and how they deal with what does happen.

Favourite author and why?

Cassandra Clare. Her books rob time from me because I open them, begin reading and the next thing I know, hours have passed. The action, adventure, romance, her characters and the way she puts it all together draws me in every time. The same thing happens when I read Tiffany King, Richelle Mead, Julie Kagawa, and Shelley Crane.

An Author you would recommend we check out and why?

I know it only says one, but I really cant decide between these two, so Im going to recommend Tiffany King and Shelley Crane. Both ladies are phenomenal at what they do! The first book in Shelleys series, Significance, is coming to the big screen in 2013. I love all their books! They both bring their characters to life. Tiffany writes contemporary YA (mostly) and she really makes you care about her characters like their stories could be happening to your best friend.

Any book news?

Into the Spiral, my debut novel, was released November 19. A prequel short story, Defending the Spiral (starring my hero, Gavin), is set to be released before Christmas. Both are published by Hydra Publications (a small press that makes me feel like I found the right place to publish).

Remnants of Life blog tour: Review

Book: Remnants of Life
Series: Book 1 in the Legends of Darkness Series
Author: Georgia L. James
Pages: 203
Publisher: Blackwyrm Publishing
Genre: Urban Fantasy horror
Recieved a copy for honest review as part of blog tour

*WARNING 18 +*

Remnants of Life is a book I really enjoyed. I couldn't put it down for very long as I kept wanting to know what was going to happen next. Author Georgia Jones has added her own unique twist on vampires. Vampires in Remnants of Life aren't created the way typical vampires are commonly made. Mother, wife and human, Samantha has a fatal car crash and awakens a vampire warrior, whos role is to keep the balance of good and evil on earth.

Samantha, who is now known as Samoda, is a great heroine. She awakes still remembering her human life, however she now has these vampire abilities that she msut adapt to. As the story progresses you discover that Samoda isn't just a normal vampire warrior, she is special.

When Samoda awakes she mets warrior vampire Drake (swoon!!) and the connection and chemisty between them is intense. Together Samoda learns about what she now is and her role. Even though Samoda has an instant connection with Drake she can't progress her relationship with him tell she knows her family are safe and well. I loved following their relationship. It was so intense, sensual and real.

Samoda is a "good" vampire warrios and with good comes the bad. The ones who have given in to the evil. Thoughout Remnants of Life Samoda and Drake have to battle along with their warrior friends against evil vampires in order to keep man kind safe and the journey they take in their fight against eveil is capativing, thrilling and sometimes scary.

I really liked the world the author created in Remnants of Life. It was exciting to learn about this other world though the eyes of Samoda as she was learning about it.

Overall I really enjoyed Remnanats of Life. It has a great storyline, intriguing characters and plenty of action to keep me hooked. I can't wait to read more in the Legends of Darkness series!

Author Bio:

Georgia L. Jones was born in Columbia, Missouri on September 21st, 1968. In 1992 she settled in the beautiful Ozarks town of Lebanon, Missouri, where she met and married the love of her life. Together they have raised 7 children and have the 8th still in their home.

At a young age Georgia learned the value of getting lost in a good book. She has always enjoyed reading and letting her imagination run wild. In her early teenage years she began to put her own stories down on paper as she plunked out the words on an old manual typewriter.

In 1996 Georgia enrolled at Missouri State University where she majored in Psychology. While there she found an untamable thirst for Philosophy and Greek Mythology. Many evenings she can still be found curled up with one of the great Greek Tragedys or reading about personal continuity by Rene Descarte.

Over the years Georgia has harbored the dream of being a published author and written many short stories. On January 10, 2010 she embarked on the dream as she began to bring the characters from her first novel, “Legends of Darkness”, to life. Upon completion in June 2010 she realized that it was not a single book but a series and created the concept of the series “Remnants of Life”. She is currently working diligently on the “Remnants of Life” series.

Book: Finding the baby Jesus
Author: Kimball Fisher
Pages: 18

Review:

Finding the baby Jesus is a beautiful story and perfect for this time of year. Chris is your typical teenager complaining that he isn't getting the perfect present he wants for Christmas but underneath he is boy still grieving for his grandma who he cared for deeply and thinking about the Christmas traditions that are no more as his grandmother isn't around anymore.

Finding the baby Jesus is a story that reminds you of the real meaning of Christmas. It is not getting the present you want or it being commercialized as it now is ,but it is about family and friends, the birth of Jesus and remembering that not everyone has a family to spread Christmas with and that we are forunate to have a roof over are head and family to care about us.

Kimball Fisher has done a wonderful job with this short and sweet story that will remind you what you are grateful for and the true meaning of Christmas with Midway, Utah setting the scene!

5/5 Stars

Finding the Baby Jesus by Kimball Fisher

After being forced to wear lederhosen for the annual holiday card picture, twelve-year-old Chris thinks that the least his parents can do is get him the Tony Hawk skateboard he wants for Christmas. But when he recovers the hand-carved Baby Jesus that everyone thought had been destroyed in a fire the year his Grandma died, Chris realizes that some gifts are even more important than skateboards.

When the author had to discontinue a cherished tradition of reading Christmas stories out loud with his family and holiday guests each week in December, he wrote Finding the Baby Jesus. He had been unable to locate enough meaningful stories that could be read in a single sitting with wiggly children.

Praise for Finding the Baby Jesus:

“Tender and true, this warm Christmas tale brought tears to my eyes.”
–Heather Vogel Frederick, author of the much-beloved Mother-Daughter Book Club series and Oregon Book Award winner for The Voyage of Patience Goodspeed

“A touching story that speaks to the importance of family, giving, and the true spirit of Christmas.”
–Matthew Kirby, author of Icefall, winner of the Edgar Allen Poe and the Pen Center USA Literary Awards for Children’s Literature

Dark Halo Blog Tour: Book Excerpt

Today I bring you an excerpt from Dark Halo by Christopher Kokoski. Enjoy, and let me now what you think in the comments below!

The man in the yellow rain coat appeared in the middle of the road.
Startled, Landon slammed the brakes, seized the steering wheel and the Ford swerved sharply to the right, back tires carving mud, truck bed swinging out like a Louisville slugger at a fastball.
Landon spun the steering wheel in the same direction as the back tires. Come on, come on.
Next to him Katies head slid across the back of the seat, thumping against the window. Frank shouted out from behind him.

Landon was still correcting the wheels when the Ford ran over the man. Not over: Through was more accurate. “What the?”
Cruel fingers of terror peeled back his eyelids, stapled them open while the mans ghostly face flashed in and then out of the interior of the pickup, between him and Katie. The truck bed split the man in half at the waist.
By the time the Ford came to a complete stop, the front of it faced back down the road from where they had come. Rows of dark Winged Elm tress barricaded both sides of the street like the furrowed walls of a tunnel. Landon watched the weather-ready ghost, his stomach quivering, but unable to move.
He remembered the paralysis from his house when confronting the first spirit. That one had not harmed him, had just passed by him. Would this be different?
Rotating towards the pickup, regarding them with grey eyes as dark as its apparel was bright, as demented as its clothing was cherry, the ghost raised one yellow boot and stepped towards them.
Landon tried to move, but couldnt. What would happen if the ghost kept coming? He had to protect Katie.
Moving his pupils to the corners of his eyes, he looked at her. He could see only half her face. When he went to speak, his dry throat rebelled and his tongue felt like a heavy slug in his mouth. What was going to happen to her?
Landon thought of Frank in the truck bed. Was he going through the same thing?
His finger twitched.
If he could move one finger, why not his toes or his foot? When he tested his theory, however, nothing happened. He pulled his mental energy together and commanded his foot to press down on the petal.

Come on

Nothing.
Frustrated, he rested for a moment, then tried to lift his foot, even one toe, but again nothing happened. He glanced back at the road.
The ghost lifted one boot, jiggled it as if to say, “I can move and you cant, nah nah nah nah nah.” It took another step closer.

Move, foot, move.

Nothing. If he could, Landon would have screamed, punched the dash, or shattered a window. Loss of bodily control both infuriated and terrified him.
Closer.
Other than his finger, the only part of his body that stirred was his heart, which thundered along, unaware that the rest of the body to which it pumped blood was all but immobile.
Closer.
He wondered what lived in the woods on both sides of the road. Packs of those rat-things might squirm out, black noses raised, catching the scent of stranded human flesh. Unable to run, forced to listen to their sick feast on Ginas body, then Frank. Eventually, they would make it into the front of the truck…
Ten feet in front of the Ford, the ghost stopped. Its wrinkled, gray face grinned beneath the yellow hood of the raincoat.
Remembering the Satanists smile, Landon wondered if a contagious madness had swept the underworld. Or perhaps, like a child, the ghost knew a secret it was barely able to keep.
Taking another step, the ghost gazed directly at him. Landon wished he could check the doors to see if they were locked. He didnt remember locking them. Straining, he glanced at Katie again. Her head remained against the window.

Wake up, baby. Please wake up.

At the grill of the Ford, the ghost halted, seeming to consider in which direction to advance. It looked indecisively from Landon to Katie. Then, abruptly, it shifted left, sliding around the grill toward the passengers side door.

No. No. Not her.

Landon screamed in his mind, but groaned dryly with his parched throat. Take me. Me! His heart pounded wildly in his chest, but he could not move.
Coming around to the passengers side door, the ghost pressed its face against the glass, the thin window the only barrier between it and Katie.

Get away from her. Get away, he cried, but nothing escaped his lips except broken gibberish.

Its corpse-grey eyes locked on Landon, the ghost poked its black tongue between pale lips and licked the window.
