Reviews (Inkslinger)

Exclusive Excerpt:

The light of his bedroom is muted. No sound but the night and my loud breathing. He

is close, very close. I smell sandalwood. Cinnamon. Aiden. I see nothing but him. And he

has turned part beast, part man. The molten blue of his eyes stirs, melts, whirlpools, freezes and revives all over again, in some inner battle.

He caresses my cheek with the backs of his fingers, along my jawline, until he reaches

my lips. He traces my lower lip with his thumb and the edge of his nail scrapes my skin

lightly, back and forth, back and forth. My eyes close, my head lolls to the side.

Then, both his hands frame my face.

“Open your eyes,” he whispers. I do, but my eyelids are heavy.

“Elisa, have you done this before?” His voice is low, almost part of the night. I can only

shake my head.

“La virgen,” he mouths. “Are you sure you want this?”

This, yes. What’s coming later, no. I nod. Apparently the powers of speech have deserted

His lips hover over mine. I feel his hot breath on my mouth.

“I should stop you, but I won’t. Because every day, every hour—awake or asleep —since

I saw your first painting, you have haunted me.” His voice is on a tight leash, and the fire in his eyes rages brighter. One of his hands leaves my face and splays at the small of my back. He presses me against his body. Hardened, coiled. For me. He brings his mouth to my ear.

“I think it’s time I haunt you back.”

#Review Emmy and Oliver by Robin Benway

Book: Emmy and Oliver
Author: Robin Benway
Pages: 340
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Bought Paperback
Rating: ✪✪✪✪

What's it about?

Emmy and Oliver is told from the perspective of 17 year old Emmy who's best friend Oliver was kidnapped when they where both five. Because of the kidnapping it left a hole and a turbulent of emotions in the ones who knew him and the whole community as a whole. 12 years later, Oliver is back and Emmy has to deal with the return of her best friend.

Before reading Emmy and Oliver

Emmy and Oliver was a book I had my eye on from the beginning of the year and when reviews started coming in and everyone seemed to be enjoying it I was even more pumped to read it.

After reading Emmy and Oliver

I did really enjoy it, it just didn't have the punch I was expecting. However it did still keep me engaged with its unique and unseen storyline in YA and the story was told though a great protagonist in our lead Emmy.

As I said the storyline is a unique YA read dealing with the fall out of a kidnapping and the return of the kidnappe years later through the perspective of the ones who where left with the fall out, namely Emmy, Oliver's childhood friend. Now Emmy had a great voice, she was funny and she was a unique individual unlike a lot of female characters in YA who all have similar traits. The relationship between Emmy and her two best friends, Caroline and Drew and her relationship with Oliver was great to read. Robin Benway seems to be a wizard at writing unique individual's and I praise her for this.

Seeing Oliver and Emmy 're- establish there friendship was so sweet and it gave me feels. By now your thinking what is the problem I had with the book, what punch didn't I get to maker me love this book. Well the problem was it just didn't go to the next level, it was sweet and emotional but I just wanted more Oliver and his feelings on the kidnapping. Basically I want the author to write a book from Oliver's POV. In all honestly I think this book would have been much better with alternate POV chapters switching between Emmy and Oliver.

Overall I did enjoy it. It has a unique story line in YA, a funny relatable character with a coming of age feel.

Have you read Emmy and Oliver? Thoughts?

Excerpt

Her words came out in a whisper. “Thank you for everything. For coming to my rescue, for…” She was saying goodbye, yet her chin tilted toward his and she took a step closer, her lips barely parted, inviting. She peered up at him and met his gaze with a look that was surprisingly heated, decidedly predatory. There was no mistaking it. Melissa wanted him too. That was all the encouragement Stone needed to take her in his arms and bring his mouth down on hers with a hungry desire that surpassed all expectations.

Melissa gasped with delight and sighed into his kiss. Stone’s empty mug slid from her grasp and landed somewhere on the sofa. Stone pressed his eager body to hers and ran his hands up her back, threading his fingers through her hair. She was glorious, beautiful, her gaze sparking with reciprocal passion. Stone groaned and kissed her again, savoring the taste of her, delighting in the sweetness of her body molded to his, as his blood pumped harder and his heart beat like a kettledrum gone out of control. It was more than a kiss; it was like coming home.

“Stone,” she said breathlessly. He opened his eyes to find his cheeks nestled between her palms.

She looked up at him her face flushed with longing. “I think you’d better go.”

“Yeah,” he said, his pulse pounding. “I’d better go.”

Thunder boomed and rain slapped the windowpanes, while the fire hissed and moaned.

Neither one moved.

“Melissa,” Stone whispered, brushing his lips over hers. “You and me… It’s like… I don’t know.”

“I know,” she replied, meeting his kiss. “I feel it too.”

Witchcraft Book-Birthday Blog Bash #Giveaway

THE MEADOWSWEET CHRONICLES by KATIE M. JOHN - A modern tale of witchcraft.

October marks the first year anniversary of the release Katie M John’s ‘Witchcraft’, book one of The Meadowsweet Chronicles.

The Meadowsweet Chronicles is an upper YA / cross-over, seven book series; blending together traditional English Folklore and the American Gothic. An epic scale, dark adventure with paranormal romance elements, The Meadowsweet Chronicles takes the reader to the heart of a sleepy English village, to the Witch Markets of Mexico, to Salem in the U.S.A and to the island of Haaiti.

Heargton is an ancient English village, settled on the intersection of powerful and magical lay lines. For as long as anyone can remember, it has been steeped in the occult and pagan rituals, becoming a magnet for modern day paranormal investigators and tourists. However, behind the folklore is a dark and powerful truth.

It is the year 2015 and a local college girl is found ritualistically murdered and displayed right at the very heart of the village. Her murder ignites deep rooted prejudices and village rivalries. The Meadowsweet sisters, long known to follow the ‘old ways’, come under increasing suspicion, but it isn’t until a young child is kidnapped that they really begin to understand the role they have to play and the powers they possess.

It is during these fearful times that Jeremiah Chase arrives from New York. Heir to the Chase Family fortune, he is an exiled errant playboy sent to his Aunt, Lady Penelope Asquithe, Mistress of Cold Stone House. Only Jeremiah soon discovers the Chase family, despite coming from a line of infamous Witch Hunters, has been hiding its own evil and nefarious history.

“In this highly charged, action packed, classic style occult horror series, Katie M John builds a world and characters that are truly dark and magical.”

Arrows by Melissa Gorzelanczyk

Add to Goodreads

Arrows by Melissa Gorzelanczyk is a modern cupid story set in present-day Wisconsin combining the fantastical elements of Greek mythology with the contemporary drama of MTV’s Teen Mom.

People don’t understand love.
If they did, they’d get why dance prodigy Karma Clark just can’t say goodbye to her boyfriend, Danny. No matter what he says or does or how he hurts her, she can’t stay angry with him . . . and can’t stop loving him. But there’s a reason why Karma is helpless to break things off: she’s been shot with a love arrow.

Aaryn, son of Cupid, was supposed to shoot both Karma and Danny but found out too late that the other arrow in his pack was useless. And with that, Karma’s life changed forever. One pregnancy confirmed. One ballet scholarship lost. And dream after dream tossed to the wind.

A clueless Karma doesn’t know that her toxic relationship is Aaryn’s fault . . . but he’s going to get a chance to make things right. He’s here to convince Danny to man up and be there for Karma.

But what if this god from Mount Olympus finds himself falling in love with a beautiful dancer from Wisconsin who can never love him in return?

This just sounds like a book I know I will love.

Top Ten author duos you would love see write a book together

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created by The Broke and the bookish

Topic: Top Ten five author duos you would love see write a book together.

This is a great topic and not one I have ever thought much about, but am going to give it a try. I am going to go with 5 awesome teams duos.

Team one

The first pair that came to mind are my two favourite authors, Deborah Harkness and Charlaine Harris. If these ladies ever wrote a book together, I would literally fight a gladiator, a dementor and a vampire to get ny hands on a copy. I think they would have to do a paranormal novel using Deborah's historical knowledge to make it epic.

Team two

Michael W Buckley and Rick Yancey. I don't read many male authors but I read both these authors books this year and they write EPIC reads. Together a book by them would be of the charts.

Team three

I am going to pick two contemporary authors I like, one YA and one adult. They are Stephanie Perkins and Cecilia Ahern. They both write amazing contemporary and I would love to see Cecilia Ahern try her hand at YA contemporary and with Stephanie's input it would be awesome

Team four

Richelle Mead and Rachel Caine. I just think these ladies could write the most epic vampire book in existence and I would be first in line for it.

Team five

I want to pair two totally different authors together to see what they could come up with. So I am going to go for E.L James and J.K. Rowling. It feels like sacrilege putting theses authors in the same sentence but hell I would love to see what they came up with.

(Some people are taking offensive to team 5. I wouldn't want this to happen but I just wanted to put two authors together who where totally two polar opposites and not even on the same writing scale. I like both authors separately. As I said above it feels like sacrilege putting them in the same sentence but...it would never happen so you all don't need to worry :)

What duos would you love to see?
