Author Interview: Leesa Birch author of The Lake Dweller Series

Hey Leesa. Thanks for taking the time to do this interview with me. You write The Lake Dweller Series. Could you tell me a little about the series?

The Lake Dweller series is about a seemingly average girl named Ivy. She belongs to a race of healers who live amongst us unoticed. Every so often they return to their lakes to cleanse and rejuvenate, to rid themselves of the pain and suffering of the people they have healed. Whilst hiding out in the city of Chicago, Ivy works nights in a free clinic, helping to heal where she can. Everything was going fine until something strange happened. Ivy finds that she can manipulate water. A power that has been forbidden amongst her people for a long time. Learning to controll her new ability, Ivy is soon caught up in a game of cat and mouse, running from old enemies and making a few new ones along the way.

Where did you get the idea for The Lake Dweller Series?

The Lake Dweller series grew directly from the character Ivy. We all know people who are suffering or have suffered in their life. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could have helped? It is for these reasons alone that I decided on healers for the world in which my books are set.

The covers for The Lake Dweller Series are beautiful. They are some of the most beautiful covers I have seen in a while. Who designed the covers, did you have any input into the design of the covers?

The covers were designed for me by the talented artist, Christel Michiels of Darkyria Design. I usually give her a basic idea of what i'd like and leave the rest up to her. I 'm a big fan of her work and I love everything she creates.

The third book in The Lake Dweller Series is called Tome III: Torn!  Have you finished writing the third book, do you have a release date and will this be the last in the series?

The third book in the series, Torn is coming along nicely. However it has been put on hold while i'm relocating, so I don't have a release date as of yet. I have the forth book planned out and ready to write as soon as I finish Torn. I have been told by some of my readers that they would like at least eight or nine books in the series. I will do my very best to make that happen.

How has your writing journey been so far? Are you enjoying it, any tough hurtles to overcome etc?

I have enjoyed the writing process so far, although I tend to have difficulty sleeping when my creative juices are flowing. I always keep a torch and notepad under my pillow so I don't disturb my husband. The toughest part for me as a writer is when it comes time to put the book out there. I'm technologically challenged, so reformating for E-books and paperbacks is a complete nightmare for me.

How does it feel knowing that your books are out there for everyone to critique?

I love that there are people out there reading my work. I try not to worry about critiques too much, I understand that my books aren't for everyone.

Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?

My advice for aspiring authors would be, never give up what you enjoy doing, keep at it. Also, if you like your work, then share it with others. We all love to read.

Finally some quickfire questions:

Summer or Winter? Winter

Fiction or none- Fiction- Fiction.

Chocolate or ice-cream- Chocolate ice-cream.

Favourite place to write- Anywhere that's completely silent.

Author Interview: Amy Lunderman

Hey Amy! Thanks for taking the time out to do this interview with me. Could you tell us a bit about the first in your paranormal romance thriller trilogy They Walk.

Hi Megan, thank you for having me! They Walk center’s around the narrator Maggie and her friends as they go to a party that turns deadly. She faces some pretty awful things, that will ultimately test her character and of those around her. In the middle of the dead rising, Maggie must come to terms about her feelings for her brother’s friend that she has been trying to suppress. With an undecided love triangle, the rising dead, power outages, and no sign of hope, she and her friends are faced with a horror they never saw coming. Will they react in time to save their lives and the lives of those they care for? Maggie is going to have to dig deep to find an inner strength she didn't know she even had, if she wants to survive. Some will be lost and some will be found, but will everyone make it.
Where did you get the idea for They Walk?
I’ve been a hardcore zombie fan for a while now, and a couple months ago I had a marathon of the AMC series The Walking Dead. That night I ended up have crazy dream about a girl named Maggie who had to fight dozens of zombies. The next morning I started writing right away, and even though I changed most of the plot and outcome (because it wouldn’t make sense, the dream was wako) it still stuck with me to keep it going!
How does it feel to have your book They Walk out there for people to buy and therefore critique?
It’s so exciting! It’s been such a fast ride of writing, editing, and listing it that all I can still feel is super excitement. I never thought in a million years that I’d end up having one of my stories out to buy. I have yet to face any sort of critique, but whether they be good or bad I welcome them just the same.
Paranormal romance is a big thing at the minute with vampires', werewolves etc being very popular. Why do you think these creatures are so interesting to us?
From just the way I came up with my own book idea, I think it’s because paranormal romance is the thing of fantasy. Something that we all enjoy, even it’s not possible to occur, it’s still great to imagine.
Do you like reading Paranormal books yourself. If yes, what are some of your favourites?
I live to read paranormal romance! I started reading Fear Street by R.L. Stine when I was younger and even now I still reread all the works by Laurell K. Hamilton. Other favorite are everything by Kelley Armstrong, Lauren Kate, Richelle Mead, Cassandra Clare, Carrie Ryan, Karen Chance, Lili St. Crow, Sophie Jordan, Julie Kagawa, Rachel Caine, L. J. Smith, Catherine Fisher, Melissa De La Cruz, Patricia Briggs, and Kim Harrison.

Is there any books you are looking forward to reading that are being released this year?
Oh yes, Sophie Jordan’s Vanish in her Firelight series and Laurell K. Hamilton’s Hit List in her Anita Blake series.

They Walk is the first in the in a trilogy. How is work coming on with the rest of the trilogy?
It’s going very well actually! The second installment entitled They Stumble is ready for release this June. I’m currently finishing up the rough draft the final book as we speak. Once the editing and rewrites are finished, I’m hoping to have that one out sometime in July.
Finally do you have any advise for aspiring authors?
Don’t give up. The hardest part is writing your book in the first place, and all the rest is just fun. So enjoy yourself, and don’t be afraid to take the leap. J

Introducing: YA author Mia Castile (YA Feature #3)

Hey everyone! Welcome to Reading Away The Days another awesome YA author Mia Castile *claps hands* Mia is the author of YA Romance book The Ocean. I would like to say a big thank you to Mia for doing this interview with me.

Without further ado check out Mia's interview and show her some love by commenting and checking out her novel The Ocean!

*Title of Mia's book: The Ocean

*Genre: YA Romance Fiction

*Release Date: The Ocean is now available to buy!

*A short description of The Ocean:

Gianna and Alex have just buried their mother. Now they have to move back to St. Petersburg, Florida to live with their recovering alcoholic father. All the new changes, however, may be more than Gia can bear. While Alex turns to football and flirting with girls, she holds her emotions inside. Together they make sense of their new lives as Gianna finds herself falling for Travis. Travis is not without his own issues. Between his insecurities and other people meddling in his life, he finds strength in Gianna. He vows to there for her doing everything he can to make it happen. The Ocean is a story of loss, redemption, and finding happiness in the middle of it all.

Mia's writing journey so far:

I began writing as a young girl. I wrote poetry, and it offered a release for my emotions and a way to channel my thoughts. I began writing The Ocean around that time too, but didn't finish it. Life as they say happened. I thought about writing and continued with my poetry over the years, but didn't put much engery in it, not like I did as a girl, sitting for hours listening to the light rock station as I wrote of love unreturned. It was after a series of re-occuring dreams about four years that I put my laptop to good use and began writing my dreams out. That was the birth of the Generations Series.

*Where did you get the idea for The Ocean?

I spent a lot of winter breaks in Florida growing up. The idea was born from an experience of stolen glances between me and a boy at the beach one day; I remember thinking "what if". So in my story the boy actually spoke to the girl.

*The cover for The Ocean is really pretty. Did you have any input into the cover, who designed it?

I knew in my head what I wanted the cover to look like; it was just a matter of finding the right picture. I originally wanted to have a picture with a pier in it, but couldn't find one that met the image in my mind. Sheryl Clark of SherlyClarkProductions.com helped me with the cover for The Ocean as well as Analogy of My Heart Volume 1. I think communication is very important in collaborations. Sheryl listened and in some ways took it a step farther than my expectations.

*Your novel is set in St. Petersburg, Florida. Why this location for your novel?

I have family who live in St. Petersburg. I have a lot of happy memories there, from growing up. The beaches are so beautiful off of the gulf, and I loved sitting and watching the beauty of the waves.

*How does it feel to have your book out there for everyone to critique?

It is a little nerve racking. When you create something you put a piece of your heart on it, you hope that everyone will love it as much as you do. I have to remind myself that not everyone will love it and that's ok. As long as I put out the best of me, then I am proud of my product.

*What is the hardest thing about being an author?

I think the hardest part would be when I am so engrossed in writing that I ignore the rest of my life. So for me, finding a healthly balance between creating and being involved in my family, luckily my family is pretty forgiving and understands when I get that crazy look in my eye, to leave me alone.

*Are you currently working on any other projects?

I am releasing a book of poetry in June called Analogy of My Heart. Generations: Book of enlightenment will be released in October. I am also working on Generations: Book of Truth, another WIP called God's of Detroit and Kristina Caden and I are working together on a secret project we hope to release this winter.

*Why should we read your book, The Ocean?

If you're interested in growing characters with a touching love story then you might enjoy my novel. It also has real life obstacles, and trials of relationships. I've been told that you get lost in the story so it has a good escape.

Author Interview: Nellee Horne

Hey Nellee thanks for taking the time to do this interview. You are the author of Kensey's story: Meeting death, can you tell us a little about it?

The Kensey's Story series is about 14yr old Kensey finding a mythical world. She is stuck in the new world and has no way to get home. While she is making new friends and living her new life, the Hooded Figure is in the shadows plotting to do something horrible to her and her friends. During the series you'll read how Kensey and her new family try to avoid the Hooded Figure's malicious plans to kill the Humans for tainting his world and also trying to find ways to stop him. Meeting Death is the first book in the series. Basically it shows what Kensey's life is like as she tries to adjust to her new life, how she meets all her friends and enemies, and how she gets through phase 1 of the Hooded Figure's plan.

Kensey's Story Series

Where did you get the idea for Kensey's story: Meeting Death?
The idea for this series came to me during the time I was obsessed with The Chronicles of Narnia. I already had my own spin on it, and something C. S. Lewis had said in one of his biographies encouraged me to write down my own version. I remember being outside in April of 2009 and the idea of an old well and a girl meeting a Fairy popped into my head. I didn't start writing it till that August.

How does it feel to have your book out there for people to read & critize?
It feels great. It's definitely different than most YA you read which is why I know that it'll become a best-seller one day. :) It's original and unique. However, sometimes people don't like that. Some people want the same old stories just with different characters or settings. I love getting great reviews from people who love my book and sometimes reading a so-so review makes me more determined to be a better writer. I meant for this book to be a fun read. I didn't write it to be action-packed or overly dramatic, thinking someone might make a movie about it one day. Although, I try to touch every emotion in the reader. There are some parts that are funny, some that are serious, some that are sad, etc. I don't want people to analyize and dissect it trying to find some deep, hidden meaning. And I'm not trying to solve the mysteries of the universe. I just want to entertain and tell a story.

Are you currently working on any other novels at the moment?
I'm almost through with the sequel to Kensey's Story. For other series, not yet.

Do you like reading YA yourself? Who are some of your favourite authors?
Yes, it's my favorite because it has paranormal and fantasy without it being too adult. I love books by Cassandra Clare, Ally Condie, Alyson Noel, and Becca Fitzpatrick.

Is there any books you are lookign forward to reading this year?
The Infernal Devices, The Fallen series, Crossed (The sequel to Matched), Hex Hall, and Spells (sequel to Wings).

Here is a few quickfire questions!

Fact or fiction? Fiction
Summer or winner? Summer
City or country? Country
Music or movies? Music
Ice cream or chocolate? Chocolate
