The Review Dilemma

Why do I have blog?

To share my love of books , with REVIEWS of books

Can I write review posts in a timely manner?

NO it seems I can't!

So today I went to write a review post and I thought and thought and I realised I can't remember what happened in this book. The reason, not that it was a terribly boring book but that I read it back in JULY and didn't write a review straight away. It has taken me 5 blogging years to admit that I am terrible at writing reviews before I move onto the next book. This is my process:

Read a book that's amazing.

Mark it as read on Goodreads, put review to come soon

Gush about it on Twitter

Promise myself to write up a review on Goodeads at least

Move on to another book

Three months later realise you have a backlog of books you haven't actually reviewed even though you convince yourself you have.

I need to sort this out! You would think after 5 years, yeah that's right 5 years of blogging I would be an expert in all things review but am not. Going to write this review and totally forgetting what happened in a book has taught me to now I at least need to put a review on Goodreads, so at least I have something to get my brain moving when I write the review on the blog.

So I need to fix this review dilemma now. I don't want to be in the same situation another 5 years down the line. I am easily distracted thus picking up another book straight away,  I can't stop for a breathe without picking up another book but am going to try... hopefully.

Does anyone else have the same Dilemma as me? Any tips?

  1. Agh, that would be quite annoying!!! I don't have this problem at all because I literally finish a book and then review it like 5 minutes later. XD I HAVE TO. Or else I just forget too much stuff, within, like, MINUTES and it's such a problem. *facepalm* So yes. That saves me. hehe.
Thanks for stopping by @ Paper Fury!

  2. I tend to review the next day. Since I do most of my reading at night I tend to finish a book right before I go to bed and think over what I want to say before I fall asleep and then write the review in the morning. The times I have been on vacation and have read several books without reviewing I'll write a few notes so that I can remember the book. I also use a form which makes reviewing a whole lot easier for me! Good luck!

  3. I give myself a 2-3 week limit on writing reviews. I pretty much have a calendar and I read in that order, which sucks sometimes - but it helps with staying organized. Then when I have about 5 or 6 books read from the calendar I do a review. This has helped me to stay super organized and give better reviews because they are still fresh in my mind.

  4. I'm with Cait, I usually write my review within minutes of finishing a book, otherwise I forget too much! There are times when I don't have the option to write a review right away, so I have the Writer app on my phone, I won't write a whole review but just a few talking points and maybe a few sentences if I think of them at the time.

  5. I try to write reviews asap but some always get left on the long finger. I do keep notes though so it's that big of a deal when I get around to writing them as I know roughly what I want to say. I know making notes sounds like a chore but it only takes a few minutes and it's a great way of locking away those thoughts until you are in a writing mood.

  6. I have to admit I don't have this dilemma at all, I am very strict with myself about when i write my reviews. My review progress is basically, finish a book, write a review for it on goodreads and schedule it on the blog the next day, but at least before startign a new book. I don't allow myself to start a new book before I have written a review for the previous one, as else I know I can't remember anything. I don't take notes while reading, so writing reviews soon after finishign the book is the only way to make sure I don't forget what happened and what I wanted to mention. I know for some poeple notes are a big help when writing reviews later.

  7. I do a mini, first reaction review on Goodreads pretty much immediately (unless I have finished the book in the wee hours of the morning and I need to get some sleep). I only review four and five star books on my blog, so many times that mini review is the only review for some books. I write it in a way that can be used for Amazon, Netgalley, Edelweiss and Barnes and Noble. I just copy and paste the Goodreads mini-review. For my blog reviews, I usually start the draft right away, it might only be a couple of words or a gif, but having the draft staring at me everytime I go to compose other drafts helps me remember that I need to do it. Good luck! :)

  8. I too am trying to get better with writing my reviews sooner. I find that I come up with so many ideas of what I want to say as I finish the book but then I put off writing the review and forget it all. So I have started writing notes as I go along. It has been a bit help.
Hope you are able to find a better solution that works for you.
