Review: Dark Inside by Jeyn Roberts

Dark Inside is an apocalyptic novel from debut author Jeyn Roberts. In Dark Inside a earth shattering earthquake causes death and devastation across the world. Something is released when the earthquake happens. Something murderous. People start to savagely turn on each other, murdering each other for the fun of it. "No one can be trusted, not even yourself."

Dark Inside

The story is told from four teenagers perspectives. Michael, Aries, Mason and Clementine must fight for survival and discover how they strong they each can be.

Each person's story starts with tragic loses due to the effect the earthquake has on humanity. Mason's mum is killed in a road rage accident. His friends are killed when people blow up his high school, while he is rushing to be by his mum's side. After the tragic events and with the world going crazy, Mason decides to travel to the one place he felt happy and safe, Second Beach in Vancouver, where he had visited with his mum. Along the way Mason must try and fight the "rage" from taking over him.

Clementine is at a town meeting with her parents when the other town residents go crazy and start murdering everyone at the meeting. Clementine's parents tell her to run and she does even though she doesn't want to leave her parents. Her parents are killed in the massacre and so Clementine decides to travel to Seattle to see if her brother, who is there for college, is still alive. She knows it would be what her mum would want her to do.

Micheal sees at first hand the violence and rage that has gripped humanity. Micheal and his friend are driving home when they see a man driving his car erratically, trying to knock another man of his motorbike. The man succeeds and even when the man is lying in the road died, the car driver, stops, gets out and violently continues to punch and kick the died man. The police arrive and intervene, however they then turn on the man and shot him in the head. This leads Micheal to join a group of survivors and try to survive by leaving the city.

Aries is on a bus journey with her best friend on the way to rehearsals for her school play when the earthquake occurs and the bus crashes. Her best friend is killed instantly and with the help of another survivor she manages to get to her school safely where she meets some of her fellow classmates and they start the journey to fight for survival.

Each character encounters bumps on the way to their ultimate destination that knocks their strength and confidence at surviving but though strength and willpower, they decide that they will fight and survive and ultimately fight the rage.

Overall I loved Dark Inside it was an intense, gripping and powerful story that shows the best and worst of humanity. I can't wait for the next book in the series!

  4. Wow. I'm really interested in this book now. The cover is amazing and then to read from the perspective of four different teens is a pretty cool concept. I'll definitely have to pick it up. :-)
