Synopsis: Hilary has one goal for her first year in junior high: to become popular. But her plans are turned upside down when her best friend leaves for the summer and a quirky girl named Kallie moves in next door. Kallie paints constellations on her ceiling, sleeps in a hammock, and enacts fantastical plays in front of cute boys on the beach. Yet despite Kallie’s lack of interest in being “cool,” Hilary and Kallie find themselves becoming friends. That summer friendship, however, is put to the test when school begins, reigniting Hilary's obsession with climbing the social ladder. Musings on Popularity by Marnie Lamb

Much of my upcoming young adult novel, The History of Hilary Hambrushina, focuses on the quest of the main character, Hilary, to become “popular.” In the weeks leading up to the book’s publication, I find myself reflecting on how the connotation of the words “popular” and “popularity” has shifted for me from childhood to adulthood.

I don’t think that I was aware of popularity as a concept that applied to people until I was almost a teenager. Up until then, I thought of popularity as something that applied to things: books, TV shows,  food, even vacation destinations. I remember being influenced by others’ choices, wanting to wear certain clothes because I’d seen other girls at school wearing them or watch a specific TV show because “everyone was watching it.” Yet popularity was relatively harmless to me then. If my parents wouldn’t buy me the clothes or let me watch the show, I was disappointed but not devastated.

When I started junior high school, popularity took on a darker hue. Unlike at my elementary school, where everyone was more or less equal—except for “nerds” like me, who sat at the bottom of the social hierarchy—at this new school, a group of six or so self-appointed “cool” or “popular” girls ruled the seventh grade social scene. Their clothes, hairstyles, and musical preferences were to be emulated, their rulings of who was “in” and who was “out” adhered to like the most Draconian of laws.

The irony of using “popular” to describe these girls is clear to me only in hindsight. My fellow nerd friends and I would snark about these girls at our Friday night sleepovers, but at school, we’d snatch at any tidbit of kindness tossed our way. “That was a really good presentation, Marnie” or “I like your shirt” kept the bullying at bay. We swallowed and sustained ourselves on these off-hand comments the way a prisoner, grateful for an extra morsel of bread, gets the strength to live another day, all the while hating her jailer. “Feared” is a more accurate adjective to describe these baby queen bees. If the unconscious or semi-conscious feelings of the other students were known, these girls were probably more unpopular than most of us “losers.”

I’ve often heard people remark, “I’m so glad my high school years are long gone, and I don’t have to worry about wearing the same clothes as everyone else or avoiding certain people because they’re not ‘cool.’ That all seems like such a big deal at the time, but it’s really not important and thankfully, we grow out of that.”

Yet have we as adults really left behind all those concerns about being “popular” and doing what others do so as to avoid standing out? We like to think we’ve matured, but those early imprints leave a mark.

How comfortable are we standing out from the crowd? How many minute and unnecessary compromises do we make in everyday social situations to avoid being different, ordering a dessert because everyone else is having one or agreeing to go to a club after dinner because everyone else seems gung-ho? The style may be more subtle and the consequences of refusal less threatening, but the message is the same as in our childhood days: Be one of the gang! Do as we do! A certain amount of compromise is necessary to any relationship. You can’t always have your way, and sometimes, doing something you hadn’t wanted to do introduces you to an experience that delights you or helps you grow. And in situations in which we deem standing by our choices more important than compromising, most of us do have more confidence to go against the crowd than we did in high school.

Still, it’s naïve to suggest that adults don’t feel frustrated or controlled by peer pressure. Even in situations where we don’t give in, just feeling that pressure reveals the cost of swimming against the waves. For instance, for many reasons, I don’t drink alcohol. I can count on two hands the number of alcoholic beverages I’ve drunk in my life, and I don’t plan to consume any more. I have no issue with others’ choosing to drink, but that open-mindedness is not always reciprocal. “Why don’t you drink?” I’ve been asked countless times at parties, even gatherings where the guests were mostly people from my own church. No matter how many reasons I offer, some people simply cannot understand why I don’t make the same choices as they do. I’m frustrated not only with them for hammering at me with questions, but also at myself for trying to placate them in the first place. Why do I need to offer reasons for my behaviour? Why can I not simply state my choice and end the conversation? Do I care so much about the opinion of someone I’ve just met that I need to try to plead my case like a defendant in the dock?

In extreme moments, frustrated with the endless loop of these repetitive conversations, I’ve said to myself, “Maybe I should just have a drink to shut this person up.” I immediately see the ludicrousness of this thought, as if I should change my way of life, force myself to do something I don’t want to do just because an annoying stranger is pressuring me. The fact that I know I’ll never act on this thought doesn’t negate its existence, and this bothers me.

Maybe we use different terms—“conformity,” “social skills,” or even “thoughtfulness”—but are we still talking about popularity? Do we retain that innate desire for people to like us, so much so that we’re willing to alter or at least consider altering ourselves to please others, even in small ways? Perhaps that’s teenage popularity’s darkest legacy: that it never completely loosens its grip on us, its ability to make us question our own difference and choices.

Goodreads Book Tag

I love a book tag so I thought why not do another one! The last book tag I did was the Okay so Bookically tag which you can check out here. Today I am going to do the Goodreads Book Tag. This is an older tag I found on Youtube but I can't seem to find the original creator so if you what to see more people do this tag just put the tag name into Youtube!

So I love using Goodreads to keep track of all my books. I try to keep it in some sort of order, I have a ton of shelves and every once in a while I do try and clean it up. If you on Goodreads you can check out my shelves here. Lets get on with the tag!

What was the last book you marked as "read"?

The last book I marked as read was The Protector by Jodi Ellen Malpas. I actually have a review of the book up on the blog already, which you can check out here. The Protector is a adult contemporary romance which I really enjoyed. Fun Fact: I have had my account since 2011 and have marked 368 books as read since then.

What are you currently reading?

I am currently reading Vendetta by Catherine Doyle, which is a re read. I read this book a few years back but am doing a re read so I can complete the trilogy. Its a YA contemporary romance that I really enjoyed. It's Romeo and Juliet meets The Sopranos.  You can check out my review here . Fun Fact: I re read books ALOT, its an issue!

What was the last book you marked as TBR?

The last book I added to my TBR (To Be Read) was Spandex and the city by Jenny T Colgan. This is a book I recived for review from the publisher. It is a fun chicklit that releases later this week. You can check out Spandex and the city on Goodreads here Fun Fact: I have 992  books on my TBR on Goodreads.

What book do you plan to read next?

I plan to read possibly Royal Treatment by Parker Swift. This is the last book in the Royal Affair Trilogy. And the first book in the series Royal Affair is my favorite book of the year so far. Its a adult contemporary romance series and its so good. You can check out my review of the first book here

Do you use the rating system?

I do use the rating system on Goodreads. The Goodreads system is out of five stars, I do however like to add half stars to my reviews as well which Goodreads doesn't provide and its something I would like to see. Fun Fact: I haven't had a 5 star read since October 2016, Royal Affair by Parker Swift did come close with a 4.5 star.

How is you reading challenge going? I changed this question up as it was are you taking part in a challenge this year as we are nearly half way though the year I thought I would give you an update.

I love taking part in the Goodreads Challenge, it is the only challenge I take part in each year. My aim this year was 100 books but as I went though a slump for a few months and I am only coming out of it I don't think am going to make it however I don't want to change it because am going to try and see how far I get on it. You can hear all about my reading slump here

Do you have a wishlist?

I don't have a wishlist. I do however have a shelf on Goodreads called To Buy where I have a ton of books I want to buy, whether I ever do that is yet to be known.

What book do you plan on buying next?

I actually plan to do a post on a list of books I want to buy next later this month but one of the books on that list I plan to buy is Simon VS the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Abertalli. This is one that has been calling to me lately along with a few other books. You can check out the rest of the books calling to me here

Who are your favourite authors?

I have many but one of my favourite is Deborah Harkness who wrote my favourite trilogy of all time the All Souls Trilogy. I have many posts on this series which I will link a few for you to check out!

That was the Goodreads Tag! Let me know what you are currently reading in the comments below and if you have Goodreads leave me a link so I can check out your shelves!

2017 Releases I really wanna read but haven't

Due to my book slump I haven't been picking up many new books but that is not a excuse as to why I still haven't even read some books that where released at the beginning of the year. I have six 2017 releases that are already out that I really wanna read and there all YA. All books linked to Goodreads.

I have been wanting this book since it released back in January and I still haven't picked it up. It's a contemporary romance about a girl who gets accidentally locked in a library for a weekend and to make it worse she's locked in with Dax who Autumn doesn't know apart from he's trouble. I would love to be locked in a library for the weekend. This sounds like such a cute romance and I think I will pick it up this summer.

I own this so I have know excuse. I actually own two copies one I brought and I signed copy I won. It's been getting rave reviews and is being made into a movie. It's full of diversity and has such an important story surrounding the Black Lives Matter movement. I need to get on it ASAP

This only released last month so I have a little excuse and in fact it's not out in the UK yet but I need to read it. It's a contemporary romance and if this line doesn't get you I don't know what will (maybe hop over and read the rest of the synopsis)

The one guy Bailey Rydell can’t stand is actually the boy of her dreams—she just doesn’t know it yet.

I loved the first book in the trilogy and still haven't read the second book and now the final book is out. It has mermaids but not in the way of your typical mermaids. You can check out my review of the first book here

I actually have a e arc of this and haven't read it. Again no excuse but book slump. It's another contemporary romance.

From two acclaimed authors comes an emotional story told in verse about friendship, love, and overcoming unbeatable odds.

Finally A List Of Cages and I have heard nothing but praise for this book. And especially after watching Emma @ Emmma Books review which you can check out here I needed to read it even more but didn't. It's a YA about friendship between two boys and you just need to hop over and read the synopsis or watch Emma's review and pick it up.

What 2017 releases do you still want to get to? Is there any I should also have on my list?

#Review The Protector by Jodi Ellen Malpas

Today I have a review of The Protector by Jodi Ellen Malpas one of my auto buy authors. This is an author I highly recommend if you love sexy adult romances.

Book: The Protector
Author: Jodi Ellen Malpas
Rating: 4stars

Synopsis

People think they have Camille Logan nailed: daddy's girl; beautiful, spoiled young woman with her father's bank balance to fund her lifestyle. But Camille is determined to have a life free from his strings. Out on her own, she's made mistakes, including one that found her clawing her way back after a stint in rehab and plenty of bad press. Now, after fighting so hard to be independent and happy, she finds her life threatened as a result of her father's ruthless business dealings. Caught between resentment and fear, Camille prepares herself for the measures her father will take to protect her. But nothing could prepare her for the ex-SAS sniper who crashes into her life.

Jake Sharp resides in his own personal hell. He was distracted from duty once before, and the consequences were devastating--both personally and professionally. He vowed never to let that happen again. Accepting the job of bodyguard to Camille Logan isn't the kind of distraction from his demons he should take. Women and Jake don't mix well, yet protecting the heiress seems the lesser of two evils. But Jake soon discovers that she isn't the woman she's perceived to be. She's warm, compassionate, her presence settling, and his duty to protect her soon goes deeper than a well-paid job, no matter how hard he fights it. He needs absolution. He comes to need Camille. But he knows he can't have both.

A bit of story time before my review. Last year I picked up Jodi's This Man and One Night Trilogy and devoured them and I just knew she would be an auto buy author for me. I picked up The Protector last year and didn't finish it. Yea I know I think I must have lost my mind for a while as I picked it up again and really enjoyed it giving it 4 stars.

The protector by Jodi Ellen Malpas is a adult romance that is steamy but less steamy than her other works but it definitely didn't deter from how good it was. I think the first time I struggled with this it was because it's told in duel POV between our leading lady and main man and I always struggle with male POV but this time I really enjoyed it and I think I liked Jake's POV more than Camilles.

What I love about Jodi's books is the the twists and turns and I swear you think you know what's going on and you really don't. Shock after shock. Jake is hired as Camilles bodyguard and you dont really know why but the reason WTF. Jake's back story really intrigued me he's ex army and I love seeing his struggle which may sound terrible but it made him feel more human and his past another WTF.

Camille as our leading lady I liked but she isn't my favourite leading lady from Jodi's books. We definitely struggled to connect at the start but in the end I ended up liking her.

Overall I really enjoyed The Protector and can't wait for Jodi's next book which is out this summer!

Have you read The Protector? Do you want to read it? Let me know your thoughts below!

Movies on my radar lately!

I love a good movie and lately I have seen so many awesome trailers that I had to share them with you. I see the majority of  the trailers on Movieclips Trailers on YouTube. You should check them out.

I have six movie trailers for you in different genres. There will be age restrictions on some.

First up is The Dark Tower based on a Stephen King novel. It's not rated yet so be aware going into it. It has violence and is an action adventure fantasy/western so a little of everything but it looks so good. It has a August 2017 release.

Next up is The Big Sick which looks funny, heart-warming, and though provoking based on a real life story. It sounds like the perfect rom-com. It's restricted R rating and its about a couple from two different cultures dealing with their cultural differences as their relationship grows. It has a summer release.

Once upon a time in Venice is up next and it looks hilarious. It stars Bruce Willis and Jason Momoa. It's about a policeman who's dog is taken in a robbery and he has to get his dog back from the person who stole it, a drug Lord who sends him on a mission in return for his dog and hilarity soon ensues. It doesn't have rating so for but I would say R rating. It also has a summer release.

We then have It Comes At Night which I don't know whether I love the trailer or am freaked out. It's a horror film and I hate horror films but I think I might be able to handle this one as it seems to be pushing toward the psychological thriller aspect. It has an R Rating and a summer release. Watch at your own risk :)

Next up we have 2.22 which is a thriller about a man who keeps seeing patterns of events that repeat themselves every day in the same exact manner and ending at the same time of day 2.22. It gives the vibes of Final Destination and Knowing. It has a Pg13 rating and has a summer release date.

Finally we have Rough Night a comedy starring Scarlett Johanson as her and her friends go on her bachelorette party in Miami and a male stripper ends up dead. Drama and comedy ensues. It looks so funny and all kinda wrong I love it. R rating and is another summer release.

That is it. Do you want to see any of these movies? What movies are on your radar? Leave me a comment below.

Discussion: Books that have been calling to me lately

Lately as I have been coming out of my reading slump I have had certain books "call out to me" What I mean by this is I keep seeing certain books around and there making me want to buy them and read them. Some are older books and some are new releases.

There is currently five books calling to me. And also a 're read that I has been calling to me. Let's go! All books linked to Goodreads!

1) Simon Vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

I have been seeing this book everywhere it's a 2015 book and I feel everyone has read it apart from me. It's a YA GLBT Romance which is supposed to be adorable. It's being made into a movie I need to pick it up!

2) Geekerella by Ashley Poston

This is one that has also been everywhere lately as it's a new release. I have heard nothing but great things about it. Its a Cinderella retelling and even though I don't usually like 're telling's this sounds so good. It has a ton of geek-ness and its set in a con. I need it!

3) A Court Of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Mass

I know, I really know why haven't I read this. I don't really have an excuse I own it in ebook format and I have a signed copy of ACOMAF so I need to get on that. But I do want to buy a paperback of ACOTAR first.

4) The lightening Thief by Rick Riordan

This has been calling to me for a few years but particularly the last year. I know loads of people love it and I think I will as well. I need to buy a copy ASAP.

5) Royce Rolls by Margaret Stohl

This is another newer release. It's been on every social media platform I have seen and I wanna read it. It's supposed to be like a reality TV show like the Kardashians and it's a tongue in cheek look at Hollywood. Am down for that.

Finally the 're read that has been calling to me is Harry Potter. I haven't read it in a few years but with the house cover editions of The Philosopher's Stone releasing next month I want to give it a 're read.

Is there any books that have been calling to you lately. Let me know in the comments below.
