Interview: Author Karly Kirkpatrick

Could you tell me a little about your YA novel, Into The Shadows.

Into The Shadows is my take on the Holocaust, told through new eyes. The main character, Paivi Anderson is your normal average teenager, but she and her family have a few special talents that they keep from
others in order to live a normal life. Paivi, for instance, happens to get visions about the future.

After starting high school, a presidential candidate seeking the upper hand in the upcoming election gets a hot tip that people like Paivi are responsible for some violent terrorist attacks in the US. He starts an organization which sets out to mark these people and make the US safer, or so he claims. It sets a whole series of events in motion that change Paivi's life for ever.

Where did you get the idea for Into the Shadows?

I am very much a student of history and thought it would be interesting to take historical themes and wrap them up in a paranormal package. I really thought of it as writing the book I'd love to read.

Could you tell me a little about your YA novel Bloody Little Secrets?

17-year-old Vicky Hernandez has a big problem. She's dead. Or not quite. After discovering she's been turned into a vampire, she tries to settle into a quiet suburb of Chicago and return to a normal life.
If only she could stop wanting to bite her boyfriend. Not to mention she is dying to find out who turned her, and why. She doesn't have to wait long before they come to her.

Vampires are quite popular, at the minute, with Twilight, True Blood & Vampire Diaries. How do your vampires differ in Bloody little Secrets to say vampires in twilight?

I love the vampire genre, and this is sort of my love letter to it. I infused it with a lot of humor and it definitely doesn't take itself super seriously. My vampires are not nearly as sparkly or emotional as the Twilight vampires. Vicky really is a normal girl, she just has an itty bitty problem that she wants to eat people and it's more about her friendships and how she copes with her new life.

The Green is another of your novels. Can you tell us a little about it? The Green is due out in August. Here's the synopsis.

Seventeen-year-old Ariceli Pisa is a senior at the prestigious Cambridge High School and has her sights set on Northwestern University. She's a cheerleader, a member of the National Honor Society, and a drug dealer. That’s the secret she has to keep from her best friend Naomi, in addition to the fact that she’s madly in love with Naomi’s ex-boyfriend. Trying to balance her life at Cambridge High with her new demanding job keeps her teetering on the edge of disaster.

The Green is YA Contemporary whereas you other two novels are YA paranormal. Is there any other genres you would like to tackle?

Paranormal is definitely my favorite to write. I'd really like to try my hand at a proper mystery. I've been an Agatha Christie fan since I was a young reader. Maybe I could come up with something like a junior
version of Hercule Poirot.

Do you like reading your self, what is some of your favourite books?

I love to read. Harry Potter and the Hunger Games Trilogy top my list of YA books, although I've read too many to count. For 'adult' fiction, I tend to go for mysteries, like Agatha Christie, or thrillers. I also like to read classics every once and awhile. I think it's good to read a good variety or it gets boring.

Why do you write YA?

I loved being a teenager. I work with teenagers now (I'm a high school teacher) so I pretty much live with teens on a daily basis. It's a fun time of life, and really I kinda still feel like I am one, if only I didn't have a mortgage and a kid.

Do you have any advise for aspiring authors?

Read a lot. Write a lot. Work with good people to help you make your writing better and make sure you're always putting your best work out there.

Thank you Karly for this awesome interview!
