Interview

Tell us a little about yourself and your writing journey.

I'm 42, happily married with one daughter and two grandchildren.  I work in a primary school in Belfast as an Executive Officer.  My writing journey began as a child. I struggled to read and was often in the remedial reading group. Luckily for me, my teachers and parents encouraged me to read and write every day.  I was determined and it worked. I developed a love of both reading and writing.  For years I'd write little stories and keep them in a journal, but no-one ever got to see them, I guess I was embarrassed.  A friend finally convinced me to write something longer, as she said I had a natural talent for story-telling. So I did!

Tell us about your book.

My book is called The Selkie Pact, a fantasy adventure tale for children, though adults will enjoy it too.  The story is set in Ballintoy and the surrounding Antrim coast area.  The locations are real and legends are retold and given a new modern twist.  Thirteen year old Finn arrives in Ballintoy for his annual summer stay, but it soon becomes clear that it will be like no other.  He is plagued by strange dreams and can hear haunting music.  Thinking he's going mad, he confides in his grandmother who reveals a startling family secret which changes life as he knows it.  Finn finds himself plunged into a dangerous but magical adventure, fulfilling a pact that was made before he was even born.  Does he have what it takes to complete the quest, and can he do it without tearing his family apart?

Where did you get the inspiration for the book?

The inspiration for the story came from a trip to Ballintoy.  My husband and I were walking along the beach when we saw a lone seal swimming out in the fierce waves.  For such a little seal, he braved the strong currents and even seemed to be enjoying the experience.  It was a magical moment - my first seal encounter - and one I will never forget.  Hence a story was born!

Why children's literature?

I chose the write children's literature because of my own early struggles with reading.  Reading is an essential life skill - so children should be encouraged.  I also firmly believe that ALL children should experience magic in their young lives.  If the story captivates the child, then it has done its job.  I want to bring both the encouragement and the magic because then I have done my job!

In 140 characters or less why should we pick up your book?

It will captivate, enchant and leave you with the knowledge that magic is everywhere - you just have to believe!
